From reading on this site I have seen several folks that are going by the Atkins diet and have quick weight loss with it. Can you tell me the pros and cons of this type of diet? Is it safe to be on this diet long term? I am clueless about this as I have not done any research myself. I have one extended family member that likes to go by the Atkins diet and seems to do very well on it.

Hi, Diannem65! Low carb (Atkins is one proponent) done right, the pros--after Induction--are no hunger, lots of energy, increased health, and weight loss. I recommend staying away from processed foods completely and sweeteners (artificial or "natural"Wink as much as possible. Google "Atkins," "low carb," and "LCHF" for more info. Good luckSmile

Go to the Atkins website and read everything there, including the food lists. Then ask your relative about his or her experiences.

the cons, not for everyone. I was super hungry on it, I didn't lose weight, I think it is very UN natural to leave out fruit, grains. I felt like puke. many people easy lots of saturated fat on it instead of focusing on healthy fat. go to Atkins site and read the book. it works for a lot but very difficult to sustain long term for some. hope that helps.

Another option for low-carb diets is south beach. It focuses more on eating fruits and veggies in addition to lean meats. It is more cardio-system friendly, as it was written by a cardiologist.

I wish everyone who comments on the Atkins saying it's not good for life would admit that they haven't done it all the way. Sure the induction is drastic but cleanses your body for the need for sugar and in the beginning you need to remove all sugars including fruit, when you move thru all 4 stages, you add back in what you personally can handle either maintaining your weight or still dropping slowly. And in the final stage you are eating a healthy clean combination of non processed foods and hopefully then go on to going organic and only grass fed meats and naturally raised animal products.

The induction stage is what most people read about and go thru and comment on and really it's a very small part of it.

my comment: not good for SOME, so what diet works for you, try it, if that is the food you want to eat.. simple as that. you don't know unless you try.

Yes try the cauliflower, they are pretty good and you can add things to dress them up. That's what I fixed last Thanksgiving.
