Have you looked into the Paleo diet? If you are looking for a high protein diet, that may be the WOE for you. Bread and pasta are not good carbs, in my opinion. The only good carbs you get are from veggies. I am following Atkins since January, and have lost quite a bit of weight.

Good for you on the Paleo diet. I haven't had any seriously bad carbs (pasta, bread, etc) since December. Had a craving for pizza, so I made the cauliflower crust pizza last night. Very yummy.
I like Atkins a lot, but I may have to look at Paleo diet after I have reached goal. On another site//forum a guy that regularly posts states he is on Paleo now, after reaching goal. He likes the plan very much.
Oh, did you know Dr. Oz had a short segment on Paleo last week? Might be worth watching....

I was going to suggest smoothies made with veggies and some fruit, toss in a couple scoops of protein powder. Snack more on things like hard boiled eggs, grilled chicken? Sounds like you are eating Paleo so just add extra meat in?

That's a really good idea. I do snack a lot. But if I snack on pure protein then that's a lot better!

Back in Nov. I was at a stand still with my weight loss and once I took the one ingredient out which was a 1/2 scoop of protein whey powder from my morning smoothies I was at losing weight again.

Hm. That's a good tip. But I am not taking any protein powder at all right now. I'm considering adding in organic hemp protein powder though. Thanks for the suggestion!

Good carbs are steel rolled oats, legumes, sweet potatoes and vegetables. Carbs are necessary...period! Try getting them in your diet earlier in the day so your body uses them for fuel, and burns them up through out the day. Protein is best in natural form like egg whites, chicken. Try to consume protein through out the day at every meal, about 20-30 grams at a time is supposed to be a good amount, they say (studies) that your body can only consume so much at one time, and any more then that just gets wasted. When needed, my husband & I supplement our protein with Isopure Zero Carb Protein Powder, we like vanilla flavor, and we mix it with cold h2o to save calories.

I hope this was of some help to you.

I am lactose intolerant and cannot eat eggs, drink milk and many other dairy products. I can tolerate butter and frozen yogurt(only chocolate for some reason) I'd like to have protein shakes but many times they require some type of dairy so I lose out. Oh and I have tried Soy milk, almond milk, yada, yada, yada and while I don't vomit(sorry) they make me very nauseous. Any suggestions?

Megan - in addition to the protein sources people have suggested, I would add cottage cheese!! It's so delicious and has tons of protein! Eat it plain or throw some fruit on it.. yum!! Smile

Drsherard - I might not be reading this right, but why can't you eat eggs?

Do soy and almond milk make you nauseous just because you don't like the taste? If so, have you tried mixing them with other things?

That's not paleo, no.

Excellent sources of protein: lean meat, poultry, and seafood.

Good sources of protein: dairy, eggs, full-fat meat and poultry

Fair sources of protein: beans, seeds, and nuts.

Poor sources of protein: cereal grains, starches

Eating more of a fair source of protein will raise your calories faster than your protein intake. Eating more of a poor source of protein will just displace better food.

Paleo is meat, vegetables, fruit, and nuts. People who truly eat paleo have no difficulty getting their protein where they want it.

okay, fair enough, but what about 2 bite cinnamon rolls, waffles with maple syrup, lemon bar cookies, two bite brownies, mashed potatoes and gravy and buttermilk biscuits? As far as I know that's not Paleo? You have to be honest with yourself on why you've reached a plateau. We all stray, we all falter we all get back on the horse and start again, but please be honest.

You've got to document everything. There are days with missing meals. Short and sweet. Then we can go back and evaluate what we've been eating that might be causing us to hit that brick wall, make changes, then go forward.

I'm with the Rocker - it's sometimes tough to document everything, but if you can get the app on your phone, (that helps!!) and make it a habit to log everything all the time, even on the bad days, then you can find patterns and triggers and help adjust!

If you look up the South Beach or Atkins diet allowed food list, you will see a list of proteins and suggested quantities. They both are very good lists.

You can always increase the amounts of proteins you are currently eating. Good luck. You can do it.

I also notice in your food diary that you are not eating enough calories each day. That is an absolute necessity if you are looking to lose weight. Your body actually retains weight when you aren't getting enough calories as it thinks you are starving.

Try using the recommended calories that FatSecret offers. You put in what rate you want to lose the weight, your height, current weight and goal weight and it suggests how many calories you should be eating in order to reach your goal weight. Three meals and three snacks per day will keep your blood sugar steady and you won't get hungry. I know it seems contrary to everything we are told (i.e., starving = thin) but the opposite is actually true.

Another suggestion is to tailor your carbs at each meal. Each meal shoot for 30 - 45 grams of carbs. For snacks 15 grams of carbs is suggested. This is what a nutritionist suggested and I am finding it works.
