Ok folks. I need lots of help. This is my last chance or the doctor is suggesting gastric surgery. My diabetes is out of control. The doctor has put me on Atkins. I am asking for all of you to scream at me, yell, anything you have to do to help me stay on this plan and get the weight off. If you want to help me, add me to your buddy list or something. I need all the help I can get.

Buddy request sent but Spacy has a point. External encouragement can only do so much it has to come from you too.

Heya,
I don't know about screaming or yelling at you...you might have to seriously tick me off or insult me first
. I could go with scare tactics and tell you horror stories about someone I know, but I think these rarely work. It's interesting how we as a species, myself included, are almost hardwired to be externally pessimistic, but internal optimists ('cause you know "that will never happen to
me
, but wow, hasn't the world gone to potty"
).
The snapshot that I got from you is that you have diabetes and are already facing serious health consequences. At the moment your doctor is suggesting an invasive surgery to try and help the problem or a comparatively more simple change of diet (apart from the fact that the surgery only forces you to change your diet). In spite of the disliking the idea of quoting Dr Phil, "there has to be a pay off" to the way you are running your diet at the moment. I think first thing you ought to try and do is sit down and work out what is causing you at the moment not to want to change your diet (because even for a chocoholic like me, there isn't a singular chocolate bar on the face of the planet that is
that
good). Is it because you eat to comfort yourself, are you bored, are there practical changes that need to be made in your household that would help you change your diet? What are the reasons behind the way you are eating now? Go to the source of the problem, and work on those, otherwise it's just a matter of time before there is a problem again.

I think that fear can be a great motivator. My knees got so bad that I could barely do the bare minimum to take care of myself. My doctor, and rightly so, refused to even recommend me to a surgeon for knee replacement until I lost a lot of weight. Surgery is more dangerous when you are overweight and the knee replacement would wear out faster with all that extra weight. I knew that as my mobility decreased I would get more and more depressed and eat more and end up one of those sad people that they have to cut them out of their home.
You should view sugar and refined carbs as poison. Is that treat worth losing your vision or a limb? I agree with all of the above posts, this has to come from you. This site is good for finding strategies to help you and support through the rough times but ultimately its up to you.

Well you have taken the first step by joining FS. I would say eat as you do but record everything. If you cheat then you cheat yourself. After a couple of days look back at what you ate then start to cut back first by just hitting your rdi. Get used to eating less for a few days. Then on your 2nd week reduce below your rdi but don't go crazy if your heart is not in it as you will just makes excuses and cheat. The weight is not going to disappear over night. Set yourself with achievable goals on a daily weekly or monthly basis. Be prepared for bad days and make plans on what to do when you have them or even how to avoid them. Look at your exercise. Get walking, start with short walks and build it up. join a challenge so you have a target to aim at.
Everyone is on FS for the same reason to lose and or keep control. Surgery is not always the answer as with everything in life you should only do what works for you. Good luck and keep smiling.

Thank you for all the comments. I have downloaded the FS mobile app so I can keep track even while I am on the go. I broke out the treadmill that was covered with clothes and boxes. My first goal is to reach 200 so I have 25 pounds to lose. When (not if) I reach that goal, then I will set another one. Thank you for the buddy requests. I have accepted the ones I got. I am determined to do this. Thanks again for the support and comments.

Drink Water
One of the biggest common denominators amongst people who lost over 50 pounds is they all switched over to drinking water. They gave up the sodas and sugary drinks and instead quenched their thirst with water. This tip alone helped hundreds of people lose weight.
Keep a Food Journal
Write down everything that goes into your mouth. Most people were surprised to see how much they were actually eating. It wasn’t until they wrote it down that they began to realize the cause and effect of what they were putting into their bodies.
Count Calories
What a boring and tedious job, but probably one of the most effective undertakings for losing weight. There is no getting around calorie balance. If you want to lose weight, you have to eat less than you burn. I personally use the LoseIt app to track my food calories (calories in), and the BodyMedia FIT Armband to track my daily calorie burn (calories out).
Control Portion Sizes
In our super-sized food culture, portion sizes have gotten out of control. Eating portions the size of your fist is a good start towards controlling your food intake. Getting in the habit of measuring your food with a digital food scale is a great way to learn how to eye portion sizes. Also, don’t feel like you always need to finish off all the food on your plate. Leaving a couple bites will teach you self-control.
Don’t Diet
The best “diet” is the one that best fits into your lifestyle. Once you find that, it’s no longer a diet – it’s just a way of life. One of the best healthy weight loss tips people sent in was to approach weight loss as a lifestyle change, and not as a diet. Once you get it out of your head that there’s an end date, you can start focusing on the day-to-day realities of living a healthy lifestyle. Being fit is not a destination – it’s a way of life.
Be Consistent
No one is perfect. We are all going to make mistakes. However, successful people are consistently living a healthy lifestyle. Over a period of time, they are eating healthy 90% of the time, and they are exercising several times a week. Make exercise and healthy eating part of your everyday routine and soon it will be as second nature as brushing your teeth.
Plan
A healthy lifestyle takes planning. Most mistakes occur from a lack of a plan. Plan your meals in advance so you know what to buy every week at the grocery store. Only buy what you plan on eating, and try to cook your meals ahead of time. The simple nature of reheat and eat makes it much more likely that you’ll stay on track.
Make Small Changes
Make small changes consistently until they are habit and you no longer have to think about it, and then make another change. There’s no need to completely change your lifestyle all at once. You’ll be much more likely to stick with your new healthy lifestyle if you make small changes. Try changing one thing at a time.
Educate Yourself
Learn the whys. Don’t just do something because someone said to. Understand the purpose behind it. Many people just want a meal plan or blueprint to follow for weight loss. However, the successful people that lost weight and kept it off long term started taking an interest in how nutrition and exercise impact their bodies. They learned the “whys” behind what they were doing, and they were more successful because of it.
Get Active
Nearly everyone who lost over 50 pounds added in some form of physical activity. Even if it was just a little bit, the fact that they were more active helped them lose the weight. The trick is to find an activity you enjoy. Not everyone likes the same exercise. Find an activity you love to do, and then push yourself out of your comfort zone. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Don’t Beat Yourself Up
You’re going to mess up. We all do. Successful people don’t beat themselves up over it. They get right back on track. They don’t wait until tomorrow to do so either. Their healthy lifestyle and weight loss continues to move forward and make progress because they allow themselves to make mistakes, learn from them, and then end up stronger as a result.
Surround Yourself With Positive People
We are highly influenced by the people close to us. Many successful people had to move forward with their lives and leave old friends and lifestyles behind. It was a hard decision to make, but they understood how important it was to surround themselves with people who believed in their dreams.
Start
How do you expect to accomplish your goals if you never start trying to achieve them? Beginning is half the challenge. Don’t be afraid of failure. People who lost over 50 pounds stopped waiting for things to happen, and went out and made things happen.
Stop Making Excuses
Successful people made the shift and realized that the reasons for why they weren’t reaching their weight loss goals were actually just excuses. It was a hard idea to accept, but once they were honest with themselves, they spent less time making excuses, and more time finding ways to accomplish their goals.
Do It For Yourself
Make ME #1. Lose weight for Me, not because of pressure from other people. We all have our own reasons for wanting to lose weight, but a common denominator amongst the healthy weight loss tips sent in was that the successful people undertook their new lifestyle because they wanted to. They weren’t pressured into weight loss by friends or family. They did it for themselves, and as a result, they inspired others to do something for themselves too.
Be Patient
You didn’t gain your weight overnight, and you aren’t going to lose it that way either. We all want the weight gone quickly, but once you realize that weight loss is a process, you can stop beating yourself up for not reaching your far-fetched weight loss goals. Stop looking at weight loss as a day to day challenge. If nothing changes, nothing changes. This is a lifetime commitment to changing.
Stay Positive
Negative thoughts lead to negative results. You are the result of what you think. Keeping a positive outtake on your weight loss journey increases the odds of your success. You will learn a lot about yourself during your lifestyle transition. There will be many challenges and difficulties, but it’s important to understand that even though it might not be easy, it will be worth it.
Discover Your Relationship With Food
Why are you eating bad? Make the connection between your eating habits and your emotions. Get to the root of your negative lifestyle choices. Know when your body needs food and when it wants food, and find new ways to reward yourself other than with food.
Don’t Try to Be Perfect
If your goal is to be perfect, you’re already setting yourself up for failure. No one is perfect. Even the people who seem to have the most perfect bodies didn’t get there by being perfect. Perfection is something many strive for, but ultimately something they will never achieve. Do your best!
Never Give Up
Weight loss happens the moment you don’t give up. Many people don’t realize how close they were to achieving success. There comes a time when things just click, but that doesn’t happen until you’re ready to throw in the towel and call it quits. The longer you stick with it, the higher your odds of success. Keep moving forward, and don’t ever give up!

Try and keep in mind. Bad days happen... But one bad meal, doesn't mean a bad day, one bad day doesn't mean a bad week. We all have them! You can always compensate across the rest of the week and even if you don't it's only a short-term blip! Your focus should be the long-term.

I have a tattoo on the inside of my left wrist. It's one word, in my own handwriting, and it's there to remind me of something very basic about my life. It's a cheat-sheet, if you will, and an affirmation.
The full meaning of it would be hard to explain, but it's not really relevant for this. Whenever I find myself in a situation where I feel like I'm about to make the wrong decision I look down at my wrist and get a reminder about a principle.
Maybe you can do the same thing? It doesn't even have to be a tattoo, if you're not willing to make that commitment. Every day after you get out of the shower, grab a pen and write a reminder to yourself on the inside of your wrist.
When you're unsure about a food decision, or you feel yourself starting to do something bad, look down at your wrist and find a reminder to take care of yourself.

The treadmill is your new best friend. You can use it for 5m or an hour but use it. If you have nothing to do and you go to watch tv...stop...get on it for 10 mins instead. 3x a day is half an hour. It all adds up so you don't have to set aside a specific time of day. It will get you breathing a bit more and raise your heart levels up. Also a treadmill is for walking as well as running and you need to walk before you can run lol

Find things to enjoy about life that aren't food. Family, friends, hobbies, etc . . . . . . enjoy life; it's not all about food.
And you can find "healthy" foods that you enjoy, also.
Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it.

I have a heart shaped ladybug tattoo. My granddaughter Alexandra is my ladybug. I am going to use that as a reminder that I need to do this. I plan on being here to see her grow into a beautiful woman with children of her own.

Oh goody! I'm glad to see that my idea is helpful to other people.
Maybe I should have a bunch of temporary tattoos made and send them to people. If I did that, what would they look like?

I know sometimes everything I you is screaming at yourself to get up off your ass and do it, but you just don't. And then you wonder why, fee worse and it is even harder the next day. This gets harder day after day.
For me, my turning point was needing brain surgery but the doctor not wanting to do it for fear of the fibromyalgia getting worse and the surgery not helping anyway. So, it was me deciding to take control to make fibro not an issue so if he really wanted to do the surgery, we could.
My issue still is exercise. I need accountability here.
Would anyone like to do a walking challenge to support our friend? I did this when I lost weight before - problem was then I didn't change the eating. Now I have worked with a registered dietician for 8 months. I just need the exercise!!
So, my thoughts are 30 miles in 30 days? That is 1 mile day..if you can do more, push yourself! I can create a challenge for us if you want.

Even though fat doesn't count in Atkins, it can cause you to gain or not lose weight if you consume too much. Be careful of over eating this nutrient. ie: cream, cream cheese.
