I started on a low calorie diet last week Thursday, I weigh 110 and I aim to lose 45kg, hopefully by the end of the year. I noticed that since I started the diet, I have consumed more carbs than recommended for weight loss and that was mainly from bananas and apples but after reading up I realised they should fine. So yesterday I strived to eat less carbs but my caloric intake was higher than my daily target. I have set my daily calorie intake to 1200. But yesterday after dinner, which was a Greek salad and pork belly slices, I went to bed craving carbs, but I had had a wrap for lunch. So I am struggling to find a balance. I would greatly appreciate help on this matter. I really want to lose weight, but I don't want to starve myself in the process.

low cal combined with low carb is a bad idea, your body has to live on something!
for women, calories should be between 1500 and 1800 per day. My plan is 70% of cals from fat, 20-25% from protein and 20 net carbohydrates per day. I've lost 36 lbs (don't know what that is in kg) in the last 11 months. Do you have a specific program u are using?
I am using New Atkins for a New You.

I don't follow a particular program but I'm not a fan of low calorie diets but then again, it depends on what you eat. A 1200 calorie diet packed with nutrients/protein/good fats can be very filling or you can eat a couple of donuts and a few slices of whole-grain bread and be left starved and wanting more. I personally want to feel full after a meal and move on with my day. I've never been good at the "white knuckling" approach to food as I can only do that for so long.

Not all carbs are created equal...some are high in calorie and are high on the glycemic index (raise your blood sugar levels easy--high blood sugar levels packs on fat). Fruits are ok but you can get ALOT more of carbs (which are also low in calorie) with non-starchy vegetables with little impact on your blood sugar. Combined with a protein and it's very filling.

I used to eat a lot of breads, cereals, rice and fruit and when I transitioned to more vegetables, it took time (I did it slowly) but within a couple of weeks my cravings died down.

Everybody is different when it comes to carbs. Some feel great on low carb some don't. Listen to your body. I personally reccomend higher protein when restricting calories and eating enough carbs so you do not feel like crap. Also remember, at the end of the day, its calories in calories out when it come to fat loss.

Thank you all so much for the responses. I am not following any plan, just decided to just down on calories. I am eating a lot of fruits and vegetables and meat and I have cut down on rice, pasta, bread and when I do eat them I eat one serving spoon. I will look up the Atkins plan. perhaps it may just be what I need. I think 36lbs is about 15 kg, about a 1/3 of what I need to loose.

Biggest factor here is what your body is telling you. If you feel absolutely miserable then you need to change something. But also remember if you are changeing the way you have eaten for years it will take time for your body to adjust. I am also doing the low-cal , low-carb. Just remember to eat your heavy carbs in the morning. Breakfest should always be your biggest meal. Your body can break down these food throughout the day better. Take a peak at the glycemic index. This talks about good carbs vs bad carbs and fats. Some fats like in dressings help with the cravings for carbs. But do your research first.

Good Luck.

I would say good for you. Most people do the extreme when it comes to dieting and that doesn't really do well especially in the long term. I love your approach to dieting, you should stick with that mentality because overtime you will achieve what you're targeting.

I've heard the Paelolithic diet is wonderful if you're into balancing your cards the right way. Let me know if there's anything I can help you out with.

My general goal is 3 meals each roughly 400 - 600 calories each. For the day I try keep the calories in the 1200 - 1500 range. I try to keep net carbs under 100g. I try to keep the fat in the 50g - 65g range. I eat a lot of protein (best hunger preventer) from either white meat or seafood. I also do 600 - 700 calorie burning cardio workouts that I realize most people are not going to do on a daily basis.

BTW - all carbs have 4 calories. There is no such thing as high calorie or low calorie carbs. It is true that carbs impact your blood sugar levels differently.

I suppose I am on the right track, I am trying to keep my calories to 1200, though on two occasions I have exceeded by 5%. I am really thankful for the responses, they have helped me put a lot of things into perspective and avoid starving my body. My only form of exercise is walking ten minutes each way to the tube station and twice a week to the supermarket which is about 20 minutes away.

I've started the Jillian Michaels Evolution system. 1/2 hr. a day, progressively harder. I'm always looking forward to the next lesson. It's a 3 month circuit.

I think you are referring to my comment. What I meant was some are high calorie because they contain more carbs than vegetables. Some of the smallest breads/cereals/crackers/bars pack a lot of carbs and those carbs/calories add up quickly. The other day I was going to have a breadstick and it was a whopping 170 calories/24g carbs. I could eat a ton of vegetables to match that in calories and carbs and feel more full. Or I could eat 1 cup of cottage cheese and get the same calories and half the carbs. So picking what types of carbs you eat has an important impact on calories and if she's going to low carb, low calorie, that's important to know.
