What is the difference between carbs and net carbs?

Carbs includes both digestible and indigestible carbohydrates, such as fiber. Net carbs shows only digestible ones.

On the Atkins diet (and maybe also other low carbing diets) only net carbs are counted. it is believed that fiber has very little impact on bloodsugar and therefore need not be part of the carb you count to stay under certain limits
So netcarbs are carb grams minus fiber grams

(and of course there is also issue of sugar alcohols but if you are not a low carber that is probably not too important Smile )

Yes, if you are on a diet like Atkins, you only have to worry about the net carbs.

For simple things like sugar, the carb count and the net carb count will be the same. For complex things like vegetables, the net carb count might be half the carb count. So, you can eat whole vegetables and get more bang for your buck as far as taste and variety go with a lower net carb count.

Unless you are following a specific diet (like Atkins mentioned above), a good rule of thumb is keeping your net carbs between 125g and 150g and try and get most of those carbs from vegetables, low sugar fruits/berries and good sources of dairy (cottage cheese, ricotta cheese). I was consuming about 225-250 g of carbs from mainly cereals, breads, crackers, pastas and despite a ton of excercise, I couldn't lose any weight. For me, the key was changing what I was eating and I could tell because I feel so much better. Good luck!
