Hi Secreters,

My name is David, I am 57 and I sit in front of a computer all day.

I have managed to tip the scales at 21st after the usual Christmas excesses and have decided, yet again, that is is time to lose weight. I like many of you no doubt, have lost all this weight before, the last time was 8 years ago when I successfully dieted from 20.7 to 11.9 with the most famous soup and milk shake diet business out there. Again, as you can probably imagine just about as fast as it came off (6 months) it went back on again (18 months). I am yet to meet anyone who has managed to maintain weight loss with that particular fad diet for more than a few years with the majority exceeding their original weight in less than 12 months.

After "successfully" dieting away probably in excess of 30/40 stones over my life time I am desperate to do this once and for all before the weight kills me.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be pleased to benefit from your experiences.
Keep calm and keep strong!

maybe it's the fad diets? They are usually used for quick weight loss but the regimen is so strict or for some other reason extremely difficult to maintain as a lifestyle. The best thing to is commit to a "lifestyle change", alot of people don't like the term "diet". Find a plan that you can incorportate into your lifestyle, and at least follow loosely once you've achieved your goal weight to maintain.

I have never tried any but there are alot of forums on different plans that people use including weight watchers and the Atkins, try a forum search. For me, I have trouble following a "plan" so I use a system of checks and balances, I work out in line with the amount I consume and If I know I'm going out (eating less healthy in a public setting where choices are limited) I know I'll have to go light on the other two meals of the day. I know I can maintain that way of living long term so I stick with it.

Thanks Selenap, I wholeheartedly agree.

The diets I have lost weight on have always been fad of some description or other and as you say have always been "diets". High protein, F plan, oranges and protein, one which meant visiting a Harley Street Doctor in London every week for vitamin injections and pills and the latest one "lighter Life". On all five I have lost between 80 and 110 pounds and have always quickly put more back on than I lost during the "diet".

This time I am trying to eat as normally as I can but cut out or eat very small portions of the foods I know will add weight. My biggest problem is living quite a hectic social life that seems to revolve around food. We are out all but one night in the next seven and at every meal alcohol will be served. So far I have managed to avoid alcohol all together but I am only six days in!

As per your suggestion I am going to try and make real changes in lifestyle but don't want to back out of the social life I very much enjoy. Changing my attitude towards food and booze seems to be the only way forward but I think it will be tough!
Keep calm and keep strong!

David
