basic dumbell/strength training exercises for a beginner?

Hi

I'm just embarking on my weight loss journey. I've started doing a step DVD (Cher) at home 5 days a week. It's only 35 mins long but it's enough for me for now cardio wise as I'm unfit and have a lot to lose, It's certainly getting me sweating and feel it's begining to tone legs. I'd like to add some strength training though. I have some light dumbells (1.5kg/3lb) can anyone recommend me any exercises/how many reps/sets to do to tone my arms and tummy though? Not a long workout just some to do when I've finished step DVD? Thanks!

I'm prejudiced (obviously), but I like free weights and basic lifts. It is much less time consuming and more effective to use a barbell with even light weights to do basic power lifts than to futz around with light weights and many exercises, sets, and reps for "toning". I ended up buying what I need in my home. A workout for me is a warm-up, 3 sets of 6, and I'm done.

To do this properly, you ought to get some coaching, but there's lots of videos on youtube and sites that talk about proper form. Just something to think about.

I have used barbells in the past, but don't currently have someone to spot me. I can't make time for the gym due to my work schedule and need to get home straight from work.

I know there is the argument of higher reps with lower weights vs lower reps with higher weights.... I've had success with the lower weights - using these DVD's. You just do way more reps and there is some cardio involved.

I have a massive collection of workout DVD's and would recommend these two for you - Tamilee Webb I Want Those Arms and I Want Those Abs. Oldies but goodies. Previews on youtube demonstrate a few of the exercises.

You can get them on her DVD 'I Want That Body', broken down into 15 minute sections - there's a preview at collagevideo and the DVD only $10. (could be a stocking filler, hmm)

Tamilee is very nicely paced for beginners, but no slouch. Get some slightly heavier handweights to work up to after a few weeks, if you want to see results.
