What is that one single dieting tip that you will advocate and stand by?

Don't think that once you lost X pounds you can stop and get back to your old eating habits and exercise patterns. Choose a plan that you can follow for life with minimal adjustments for aging and any unavoidable changes in activity level.

Ingria has a great point. Mine, for weight loss, not so much for general maintenance, would be "Always count your calorie intake".
"Keep your friends close, your enemies closer, and the cookies at the other end of the table."
- Kingkeld.
"Eat less, move more, lose weight."
- Kingkeld.
"Do. Or do not. There is no trying."
- Master Yoda.
I started my weight loss journey on October 4th, 2010 - and this is what I have accomplished so far:

I "feel" better not eating processed carbs like crackers, cookies & cereal. Plus I agree with all the tips before me.

Just one? Geez, it's an all around strategy... but how bout this... if you're up during normal hours, try avoid eating after 6. Go to sleep a little hungry and wake up lighter. Just chug some water (or in my case have some whiskey hahah; no carbs!) if you get hunger pangs.
Stay the course, stay on point, stay motivated, dedicated, and you won't be stopped. Discipline. Perseverance. Focus. Dig deep and you will be victorious.

As you lose the weight ditch the old clothes so that you embrace your new lifestyle and not fall back into your old routines and old clothes.

Thanks all
If I can offer someone just one tip it will be that you need to realize that it is a long-term "commitment". You're in for the long haul. Dieting is not a quick fix. In my case I know that I did not make the kind of lifestyle chance that is required. My humble 30 kg loss thus far has only been due to sheer sweat and exercise. I know that I won’t be able to keep it up forever... I did manage to cut out sugar from my diet (with the odd small cheat now-and-then) and also have eliminated red meat completely from my diet. I miss the barbeques and jerky though… I am not sure what else I should (and what I am prepared) to do. Why is all the nice foods bad………why!?

Also, I see what everyone is saying about the counting of calories. I agree to some extend but as a whole I don't think it is something that is or should be sustainable. It is just not normal to weigh and measure everything you consume. However, if the aim of this exercise is to learn about food and your limits thereof, then yes. But at some point you have to be able to maintain your weight without any counting tools. You have to develop some kind of instinct that will guide you to make the right food choices. .

I changed to organic and went for taste (quality over quantity). I avoided diet foods and artifical ingredients. I was shocked how good food tasted, how satisfying food became and once I stopped craving additives, how my appetite dropped. I went as close to max healthy fiber and found the balance I needed. Yum!

No grains. They are as bad for you as sugar. Replace with nutrient rich carbs.

One thing? I would say get enough sleep.
Whenever I'm sleep-deprived, my diet and exercise plan falls apart.

Lift weights so you can eat more and still maintain. 1 pound of muscle burns around 40 more calories a day at rest than 1 pound of fat. Don't drink your calories and always get proper rest!

There's a lot of great recommendations on here... Some are not 100% factual but great advice in all. My #1 dieting tip, that I will advocate and stand by is: Diets don't work. 85% of people that go on a "Diet" gain the weight plus some back in 1-3 years. Learn about nutrition "knowledge is power". Find someone to Coach you and guide you in the right direction, provide support and ensure you're successful.
