Shoes for beginning overweight runners?

Hello everyone!

I have been researching a pair of good athletic tennis shoes I can get because I plan on beginning a gym membership VERY soon. I want shoes that will allow me to run comfortably. I have very wide feet, and my left foot is smaller than my right one by like 1 inch. Normally, I don't even need WIDE shoes for my left foot really but.. I can't even get the same shoe on my right foot as my left. I know that isn't particularly TOO uncommon, but it is making the quest for tennis shoes that much more unbearable right now.

Anyone else here have any suggestions or particular shoes they would recommend for wide feet?

Instead, hie thee to a good running store. By this I do not mean a mall store like Foot Locker, but rather a shop that specializes in running. They will measure your feet, evaluate your gait, and help you find the best possible shoes for you.

Yeah, I found a pair I think I'll order from New Balance thanks for the suggestion! It helped because I was keeping them in mind before and I just got on the site and found I could custom make my own pair. It's going to be quite pricey but I need a good pair of shoes because I plan on running twice a day/getting some miles in there!

Don't buy them unless you've tried them on and run at least a little bit in them. It would suck to spend a lot of money on shoes then find out they didn't work for you.

Check out a store like The Running Room or a similarly focused venue where they can assess your personal issues and recommend the right shoes.

I started running at 225 lbs and had some issues at the beginning until I got the correct shoes. Turns out I over pronate and that was leading to knee troubles. I got shoes that have extra support on the inside of the foot and was good to go. They don't cost more than your regular off-the-rack upper end running shoes but they make all the difference. And once you know what type of shoe is best for you, you can order them online.

Agree that you need a specialty running store. I was lucky and found one in Arlington Heights, IL - I didn't know they were mainly a Brooks store but the owner spent a long time with my high arches, size 12 and my 243 lb. body. I bought an indoor pair and an all weather pair. I've had every brand known to man and thanks to this man I am wearing the most comfortable shoes. Find someone that cares!

I agree totally with hoser. Go to a good running store. they will watch you walk/run in several pairs to determine your foot style need (stability, support, etc) and let you make the choice. You can save a few bucks by going cheap, but your body will pay a dear price. Go to the professionals.

I have tried out asics and they are great. I have went toteh running store and also got them from zappos.com which has free shipping and returns they are great.

I really think going somewhere like Fleet Feet would be to your benefit. Having the right shoe really makes all the difference when you are just starting to run, especially overweight.

Since you're just getting started it is a perfect time to "warm up" to these. A runner may have more issues because running 5 miles as soon as you begin barefoot running is not recommended.

Bugcakes, are you sure that running is the best for you? More: running in a threadmill? How much "overweight" are you? Shouldn't you consider biking first and then running when you're not overweight?

I started dieting 35kg ago, then I started walking; half way through I started doing some bycicle rides - these allowed me to exercise a lot longer, burning a lot of calories without stressing my legs, knees, feet or back. I just started running after loosing 30kg! Now I do run a lot, more than other type of exercise... I ran a couple of 10k, half marathons, trail runs (26k), and I feel I really need running to keep my sanity. Don't do it without being ready for it.

I started running stepping on the heel and now I run on "toes and foot pad first", like barefoot running. It makes all the difference for knees and also to the achilles tendon.

I agree with Diablo360x. I can tell you that since I started wearing my Vibrams (KSO Trek), daily for over a year now, I have not had any knee problems like I did before them. My ankles don't turn, and I don't pronate or have plantar fascitis (spelling?) either. I didn't start running in them until a couple months ago, when I started my real weight loss journey, and I couldn't be happier. Barefoot running is definitely the way to go.
