Thyroid Issues Anyone?!?

To be blunt, I have no thyroid. I have had thyCancer and now I'm fat. Don't get me wrong I got myself into most of this situation but the thyroid thing doesn't help. Having basically no metabolism isn't so great for an already "kinda chubby" girl...haha. So now my ultimate goal is to be 175lbs. 150 is what I'm "supposed" to be for my height but I have been over 200 since about a year after HS. I busted my knee, lost my job as a waitress and then put on some weight, got cancer, got depressed put on some weight. Got married lost some weight. Got preggers 2 times...gained 40lbs, here I am sitting at between 245 and 250 everyday.
So I'm here asking if anyone else is low thy or no thy and has any advise? I'm already on a higher levothroxine dose so I can't really go much higher. I could use ALL the advise you have. Thanks to all in advance!

I've had a low thyroid since i was 18 and am now 56. I've done alot of research, not depending on the medical dr's for their, here take a pill and watch what you eat' attitude. Yes, i'm still on medication but much lower than i've been in the past and always getting blood tests to make sure the dosage is right for me at that time.

You don't have a specific diet on your page. What i do see in your food input is not good. Without knowing your eating plan, it's hard to give advice. Are you going to go with a specific plan to lose the weight or just go for healthy?

I'll tell you what i did over 20 years ago. I eliminated everything 'white' , white sugar, white flour and white starches. All gone, forever, no nutritional value in any of them. If you need simple carbs to fill out a meal, then change white rice to wild rice. Whole grain products, and if you need a sweetener use Stevia.

your input of a bagel, cream cheese and Doritos is a sure fire way to keep putting on the weight, and getting very little nutrition.

Low thyroid levels can hinder weight loss but not stop it if you really put an effort into it. It may slow it down and that's even more reason to work harder and eat cleaner.

just out of curiousity, what's your blood type? that might help determine which diet plan is best for you.

What I've noticed is that I can not eat the minimum calories (1200) no matter how healthy on a daily basis and still lose weight. I came to the conclusion that when I was all in out tired and eating junk food to get some pep (which didn't work by the way) that I actually lost a lot of muscle. I'm now in process of building back some muscle and am not focusing so much on losing weight any more. Try exercising and I mean really exercising. You CAN do better than 10-30 min a day. I know you're tired but one of the benefits of exercising is gaining energy. The more you exercise the better you feel, the more you want to exercise. It gets to be like an addiction, I have to get a work out in or else I'm cranky.

If you want to eat for energy, try eating most of your veggies raw when possible. I saw that you were on to the Carb situation with your last journal entry that should help as well.

I eat foods that are rich in iodine, avoid all fast foods, sugary things etc and try and limit my intake, but still have a bit of a struggle as I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so exercise is somewhat restricted. I am at present after losing 28lb as then I will feel good again.

I said low carb, not low calorie. Try something like atkins. It works for me. But I also recommend strength training as well. Increase your BMR.

Good forum. I think there may be something to the low carb diet, as well. I've been struggling for quite a while. I have Hashimoto's and I'm on a high dose of Armour Natural thyroid. I was losing weight at an extremely slow pace until I started Atkins a month ago. I've lost 15 lbs this first month and I'm really pleased. Hopefully it will keep moving in the right direction......DOWN.

I was diagnosed with graves first so that is what I focused on, so will be picking up the book if I can find it.

It's funny you mention low pulse. I went in for surgery (unrelated to thyroid) a couple years ago and the nurse that was taking care of me after surgery was really upset at how low my pulse was. I think it was in the 50's. Nothing was done then, but it raised an eyebrow, so I asked my endocrinologist at the time. She said congratulations for having such a healthy heart. At that time I was running and doing yoga trying to lose weight.

I also can't stand to be outside in the winter. The cold actually hurts me.

Because I was stable for so long I asked my family doctor to take over so I didn't have to make another trip to the endocrinologist. I'll see him next month for a check up. I'll talk to him about the dessicated pork thyroid then and also do some of my own research. Thanks again for the tip.

24 years ago my parathyroids went nuts and shipped all my calcium straight to my kidneys.. hence staghorn kidney stones...they removed all my parathyroids and my thyroid and did numerous surgeries to removed the stones from my kidneys... I now have very low kidney function... stage 4 of 5 or so they tell me. (no dialysis yet... and hopefully never...) I have to limit phosphorus and potassium intake because of my kidneys... I take calcium orally and thryoid meds.. (along with numerous blood pressure pills) Over the years my weight just kept creeping up and creeping up. in March of 2011 I was flat out horrified at my weight and decided to change my life style.. cautiously, healthfully so as not to damage what kidney function I have left... I seldom eat over 1500 calories... and in a year I lost 55 pounds and kept them off... then I hit a plateau for about six months... that was just flat out irritating! But.. I knuckled down and got busy counting my calories and pedaling my stationary bike ...and I'm back to loosing weight...Watch what you eat and just keep moving all that you can! Don't give up, don't get mad at yourself, be patient... love yourself as you are and think that you have a "Lifestyle" and not a "Diet"... good luck!

How many calories/day?
