I'm curious if anyone here has acid reflux and can maybe give me some info. I just went to the ENT because my voice has been gone 18 days this month so far and he says he thinks I have acid reflux causing my vocal cords to be red and swollen. I've done the barium test for acid reflux before and was told that I didn't have it. I don't have heart burn or chest pain, so I'm confused as to why he would assume I have reflux. So I guess my main question is, is it possible to have acide reflux with no symptoms? Is anybody here who has it without symptoms or mild symptoms that maybe I'm missing? I have other stomach issues but the only time I've had heart burn is when I was pregnant. I guess I'll take the meds for now and see if my voice comes back and stays back. Maybe I need a second opinion, or just some patience.

my husband has it & his only symptom is tightening in his chest, makes it harder to breath. it was so bad once he thought he was having a heart attack. he takes zantac now & that helps.
vinegar works great, it changes the ph in your stomach. i've heard that apple cider vinegar diluted with water works best. but i prefer to eat pickles if i feel it coming on.

I can't have vinegar at all - I am taking prevacid - but also found out that I have food allergies; which could also be causing the problems.....you may want to see if you or your husband has food allergies; even though the Zantac would mask the systems a bit, you would still have a reaction. I think my life will be forever prevacid; hate it though. And, get this I am allergic to peanuts, cow's milk and rice - now tell me how I can cut all those out of my diet - I have done the peanut butter now for 8 weeks - that is easier than the cow's milk and rice. I have used Almond Cocunut milk and try to reduce the yogurt and cheeses - but wow is all I can say - if you find something that works; please share.

You should seek medical help - I had it for years and only recently went to the doctors. I discovered acid reflux is very easy to treat but, if left untreated, in the long run it can cause severe health problems

I have had acid reflux and also work in the GI lab of a hospital where we do upper endoscopies and colonoscopies. I am not a doctor but I would suggest talking to your doctor about having an EGD done by a gastroenterologist possibly with what is called a Bravo capsule study. In a Bravo capsule study an EGD is done and then a pH monitoring capsule is attached to the wall of the esophagus about 5-6 cm above where the esophagus meets the stomach. The capsule monitors pH for 48hrs while you keep a journal of things like when you have symptoms when you eat or drink and when you lie down. It is something to consider. Also twynks is right it can cause serious problems such as a condition called Barrets esophagus which can develop into cancer.

Thanks all for the info. I'm still not sure I have the acid reflux and still have a hoarse voice, going on 3 weeks now. But since Saturday my throat hurts horribly. I haven't worked out because breathing too heavy makes it sore and I'm extremely tired. That is part of why I don't think I have the reflux. But, I'm still going to stick with the Prilosec before dinner and see if I can get my voice back.

I have been on many different types of acid reflux medicine in the past. My only symptom was the ball of phlegm stuck in the back of my throat. My new allergist and immunologist has put me on pantoprazole. Acid reflux doesn't mean you are going to have heart burn. I would suggest reading up on it, it can have many symptoms.
If you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.-George W Patton

weigh in
Good luck! I weigh in every day which has to stop. It is too easy to get caught up in the excitement of seeing the scale drop so much in a week-that is because of water weight I am sure.

Need suggestions on healthy/low-calorie foods.
You can use shakes for a few days. I have used the Atkins shakes and they are very good tasting. Soups are good though as stated above you may have to puree them. You could puree or blend cottage cheese ...
