How does one know they are in or out of Ketosis?
I see others' postings often saying.. "I ate xxx and it kicked me out of Ketosis", or "why am I not in Ketosis?"
So... how does one know?

I don't know much about it, but I bought some Ketone Strips from Pharmacy. It shows I have a small amount of Ketosis.I follow Atkins Induction Plan to a T.I feel I should be further in Ketosis. The only thing I can figure is I don't get enough exercise due to recent back injury.Good luck.

Thanks man, I'll look into those. Not sure if you aren't logging all your foods, but looks like you are not getting nearly enough protein, that may have something do to with it.

I too am in ketosis but my weight is not moving too much. I'm exercising but the scale isn't moving. I'm going to try cutting out my one cup of coffee and all dairy and see if tht helps. you keep a check on your ketosis levels by checking ketone strips every morning when you wake up. That will help.

Thank you! Sounds like ketone strips are the answer.

Yes, I use ketone strips as well. Seems like when I first started my diet, I could regularly register in the Moderate - Large region. Now if I fall out of ketosis, it's harder and harder to get back and stay there. I wonder if the body eventually gets resistant to the "tampering".

Thanks, that was very informative! So I wonder if the reason I am having trouble staying in ketosis lately is because I have been eating more fat than I did in the beginning. Maybe if I stick to more things like chicken and fish rather than steak and hot wings, I will see more results. Plus, I have been eating more dairy products (like cheese and sour cream) lately which my dietician said I should limit.

hi everypone. New kinda new here, but had read alot about low carb dieting. I have noticed that alot of you are actually stalling your metabolism by actually not eating enough. Several of you are showing that you only eat 600-800 calories a day. If that were me, I think id be in a comma by now. I have been averaging around 1500 or so calories, and someitmes more. My average weight lose for two straight weeks has been alittle more than a half pound lose per day. This is my second attempt at this low carb diet thing, the first time a few months back, i failed misserable because i wasnt eating enough.
Avoid those carb and EAT FAT AND PROTIEN, and be happy

I'm struggling with this as well.
Two things I've read: 1)you should only eat as much protein as your body size requires. There are calculators online. At 5'7" my calculation was between 50-60 grams. Since some protein converts to glucose, particularly in the absence of carbs, you don't want to eat too much protein or it will kick you out of ketosis;2)if you stay in ketosis for some time your body will become keto-adapted, will use all the ketones, they won't spill into urine so the ketostrips won't work. You still may be in ketosis but would need a ketone meter that tests blood ketones to find out. NovaMax makes one but the test strips are pretty expensive.
I'm wondering about dairy in my case, or maybe some supplement I am taking. I'm going to eliminate dairy and supps for a few days, up my coconut oil and see if that works.

Jimmy Moore at livinglavidalowcarb.com has been testing the use of a blood ketone meter with a LCHf diet. It is interesting reading.

Thanks Aurora - very interesting. Wish I could afford to use the meter...

Remember that this is not an all or nothing proposition. Changing a lifetime of eating habits will not happen overnight. Aim for 80%, any thing over that, is fabulous.
