I am soooo confused right now and dont know whether it's worth it. I was fine and happy living overweight, now what I thought I was doing right isn't and I guess I'm learning more day by day but it's not as easy as I thought. I'm sure I'm not alone, but I found out this morning that bacon is not an ok food, neither is sausage. If it says O carbs, dont believe it. I also learned today that coffee by itself has carbs...WHAT? I can't even trust my weighing scales. I get on and it has one number and I re-weigh to be sure and I get another number at least 2 pounds different. URGH! and I weigh more now than when I started.

I think most of us can understand your frustration! It's a long learning process!

It really doesn't matter what the scale says. Leave it in one spot all the time. As long as it's consistent, it's not important if it's off. Many people don't weigh in every day. I do, I keep a graph paper on the wall and mark on it, it's inspiring for me.

Bacon is okay as long as it's sugar free. It is very high in sodium so that can make you retain water. I buy "low sodium" bacon at Costco.

Any of the processed meats are limited, including sausage, but you can have some.

The carb count in coffee is low, but most people recommend cutting caffeine in induction anyway. I drink about 16 oz a day with cream in it. When it's gone I'm going to buy decaff.

YES, it's worth it! We have to relearn all the things we've been taught over the years. Now we get to have "real" food! Like butter, REAL mayonnaise, etc....all the things we were told to stay away from.

Keep it up, you'll find things that you enjoy Very Happy

How long have you been trying the Atkins diet if I might ask?

Whoa.....stop. Take a deep breath.

First off, if you are still on Atkins, as your profile indicates, bacon and sausage with zero carbs are both OK to use. Yes, there are concerns with nitrites/nitrates and possible hidden carbs, but, for now, I wouldn't worry about that. Nor would I be concerned about plain coffee having a minimal amount of carbs. Let's face it, none of us gained lots of weight just by drinking plain coffee!

Where are you getting your information on Atkins foods? There's a lot of info out on the various websites that, while intended to be helpful, just provide confusion when you're starting out.

In your early stages (Induction), either the 2010 Atkins book, "A New Atkins for a New You" or the tutorials over on the Atkins site should be your guide. Know the information there like your own name! Keep referring back to those 2 sources and use them to plan your menus.

Begin to log your foods here on site....every day, every meal, every food. It may seem daunting at first, but it will help you in AMAZING ways, PLUS, if you do have a problem along the way (everyone does), we can take a look to see what's really going on.

With respect to whether or not this weight loss journey is worth the effort....only YOU can answer that. You might consider making a list of the real reasons you considered embarking on this weight loss journey....the REAL reasons, not why you think you OUGHT to lose, but why you really WANT to lose.

Good luck and welcome to the site.

Hi klh,
Ok ..take a deep breath,
Bacon & sausage are ok on Atkins --ALL bacon has some sugar in it, same with sausage. Just read the lable for the carb count and try to make sure the sugar on the ingredient list is at least the 4-5th thing listed. Most of us try not to eat too much processed meat but most of us do eat bacon.
The debate about coffee carbs has been going on a very long time...I wouldn't worry about the coffee --
If you're getting different weights on your scale , maybe it needs a new battery or maybe you need a new one.
Try to weight yourself only once a week, it's much easier and you won't drive yourself crazy ! Be sure to take your measurments now...
and then measure once a month. Even when you think that you are not losing are losing inches !
Also we all go up and down a few pounds..your body is just adjusting plus you will have- that time of month - when your weight usually goes up alittle , don't worry about is usually just water weight.
So --have you read the book ?
Just be sure to eat within the given range for YOU ( in the book )
eat 20 net carbs per day and of those 20 net carbs make sure you
eat 12-15 net carb in veggies from the induction list ( in book )
eat good proteins..
eat good fats...butter, olive oil, avocado etc.
Atkins is HIGH FAT... so it's ok to eat..just don't overdo it.
limit cheese to 3oz a day
limit heavy cream to 3 Tbsp. a day
limit artifical sweeteners to 3 a day
Some people find that the Atkins bars / shakes stall them...if you
want to try them just watch and see how you do and limit them to
2 a day .
drink your water--you'd be surprised how much it does help.
log all your food this will help you to see what is really going on.
It is very easy to think -just a tiny bit won't count.
Try to pre-plan your meals and prepare ahead as much as possible. This is really easier than it sounds.
I'm probably over loading you ...sorry ...
All these things are in the book ... you can always come here to ask as many questions as you like. Also go to the Atkins community site, there is alot of help and support there too.
Good Luck..

I bought the book here about a couple weeks ago (it sits on my computer desk right where I can see it). I was experiencing the most frustrating stall EVER known to man...almost threw in the towel.. I mean I was getting a little upset over it. Grabbed my Atkins book, and reread it. It talks about people might be experiencing a stall because of yeast problems... eliminating the foods that are created from mold: yellow cheese, mushrooms (my fav), and fermented foods etc... I stopped eating them here a coule days ago, and started losing again. I also bought nitrate free bacon (which is hella expensive - found it at WalMart), still eat one sausage patty instead of two. I'm still experimenting with foods and in the process found out several things that cause me problems: Atkins endulge yummies of any kind, artificial sugars, mushrooms, yellow cheese, vinegar, and every time I drink A cup of coffee with 2-Splenda and A TBSP of cream I experience a stall. The Atkins book is well worth the $14.95 found at Barnes & Noble. This really helps you get through those times where you wanna nerd rage against the scale, and quit the program. BUT... if you read the book, it encourages you to keep trying, and to keep solving the mystery of why you might be stalling. I've lost 5" and just a wee under the 10# mark...still moving forward.. one inch at a time..

@Sillycee: That may be why even on Atkins it is recommended to keep a journal of what foods you are eating. That is one reason I log everything into Fatsecret. It makes good sense. That way if you go back and notice "Ah ha! I stalled this week and the only thing I ate differently this week from last was *blank*" you know what to try and cut. For me I've stalled this week and it was: Vodka that did it (plus I have a suspicion that my protein shake that I use as a meal replacement isn't helping).

Hey klh, it is okay. You can do this, you just need to make some tweaks, and you will see the numbers start moving in the right direction.

The stricter you are with induction, the better the results initially, but stalls are an eventual part of the process for all of us. I have only recently started with Atkins after following my own plan that was moving in this direction for the last four months. I had been gradually reducing carbs, starting with sugar (my addiction), and eventually all refined carbs. I was stuck at the same weight for SIX WEEKS! when I finally decided to go for the Atkins plan. Since then the weight has started coming off. But, I do find that when I had some nuts, or some berries, the weight loss stalled. I also looked at the NSAIDs I was taking for my knee pain, and found that that was stalling my weight loss.
I am sure I will learn more and more as I go along about what works and what doesn't work...for me. That is the beauty of the Atkins plan. We might all start with induction, but from there, things get very individualized. We need to pay attention to ourselves and how we are reacting to what we put in our mouths.
Recording every bite helps you build the database of information that will help you make the best decisions for you. This is all about you and your future and your health. Don't forget that.
Hold on to that towel, and commit to the next week. Do the very best job you can for this coming week, and then re-evaluate.
A bad moment does not have to be a bad day, bad week, or a sign that you can't do this. It is a moment. Just that. Pause and go back to the person who really wants to be healthier and happier.

Yeah I'm a "I want it now" type of person... Don't like waiting for things to come in the mail. The day I bought the Atkins book, I was in a nasty mood and wanted resolution NOW! Haha... { my poor husband} the book has been well used... Pages are earmarked and major highlighting has taken place in it..
Last week my stepson graduated from school, and we went out and celebrated.... 4 tequila shots and a long island ice tea later .... Didn't go well for the rest of the week for following Atkins.

It answers all your frustrations. I went Paleo go get healthy, and lost 14 pounds in two months. I was happy losing 8 pounds the first month, and didn't expect that.

Now I am down 20 pounds and I am at my lowest weight ever as an adult: 102 pounds at 5'3"

you want quick answers...the atkins site has the basic part of the book in the left navigation explains so much. we buy nitrate free ham, bacon, turkey, et. don't use the artificial sugars. for me weight loss stops if I eat the atkins bars or any kind of anything that resembles chocolate or sugars. hang in and learn.

If you are looking for a "diet forever" then you found the right one with Atkins! This is really not a diet but a way of living healty forever! I have lost 100# over 30 years ago and maintained all these years, my children have been raised with no fast carb and are as healty and happy as can be. Yes I have put about 40# on few years ago when my thyroid gland let me down and my hormones got out of wack with menaupose, now that these problems are "fixed" I am going back down to my healty weight.

Good luck and hang on there, it gets easier and easier!
