Sorry to see you go, Kimzie. Of course, we all gotta do what's best for us. I too am curious as to what you have found that is better.

You know you can add a whole new item when you know the nutrition information for the item already right? Just type in the name of the item so "Chicken Nachos" and click "New Item". It will take you to a screen to add all the nutrition for that item, and then you can chose to share it or just keep it private. I use the recipe calculator at http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-calculator.asp to figure out the nutrition for different meals I make, and then once I have entered in the nutrition information here on Fatsecret, it's saved for the next time I have that meal/recipe.

umdterpsgirl - to one up that for FS, you can add a recipe onto FS and as you enter each item in the dish it'll do the nutritional breakdown per serving size.

Hi Katie, I've tried to do that too, but my recipe still says "pending approval" so it doesn't seem to show up again when I search it (I only put in ingredients, not the cooking directions). It does show up when I've added it as a custom item though.

I switched over to MFP a while back just because I prefer how the News Feed & forums are laid out. I did switch to food tracking over there too & the BB app seems to work much faster as well.

A big deficiency I see from logging food over there is that the site does not give you your total burn for the day after entering your exercise & calculate your daily deficit like the diet calendar does here. Those background calculations are hidden, so you have to infer it from the calorie intake target they calculate for you (i.e. if you have your loss set to 2 lbs a week, you'd add 1000 to the target to see what the site expects you to burn in a day). However, I track that offline in a spreadsheet because I wear a BMF activity monitor that gives me that info. If I depended on the site estimates to track my deficit, I would have continued tracking here.

On MFP you also can't see a quick summary of your daily calorie totals like you do when you click on My Diet Calendar. There is some report functionality there, but I haven't found it useful. Again...I don't need it since I do my own thing offline.

MFP has a recipe function as well which I think is just as good as the one here, but kimzie is saying there's an option to just add a calorie total if you know it & don't want to enter the nutrition. If you don't care about the macro/micronutrient content & just want to log the calories, you can put that in. There's no option like that here.

If you're a calorie counter, that's pretty cool that you can just throw in an amount of calories for your daily total without breaking it down on MFP. I on the other hand count the macronutrients as opposed to the total calories. That has been instrumental in finding out what works best for me and my goals.

CJT1217, I'm in the same boat. I tried MFP but I need the breakdown. Bless those that don't lol! A lot of my local friends use it but I've stuck with FS, just less complicated but that's just my opinion.

Word. With 3 macronutrients all contributing to the total caloie intake, it's good to know what's what. For example, you need gas for your car, you can't just put any old gas in your car, it's specific for your car to run correctly; could be diesel, 87, 89, 91 octane, or race feul... unfortunately we have to figure out what works best for ourselves, and that's where the breakdown can really help. My bod like low carb, while others like high carb, it just all varies so much.

I came here from the USDA site "SuperTracker". I loved that you can generate reports that show how you are doing with micronutrients as well as macro, from day to day, or for a month or more. And you can track your exercise.
But...it does not have much flexibility in the system. And when you try to eat outside of their recommended parameters, the system goes a bit bonkers. I spent several months trying to lose weight their way, with no success. I need to eat low carb for my body to let go of the fat. Plain and simple. This seems to do the best job for me so far to track my net carbs.
A bad moment does not have to be a bad day, bad week, or a sign that you can't do this. It is a moment. Just that. Pause and go back to the person who really wants to be healthier and happier.
