Watch your labels! I have weighed & measured some products into serving sizes according to manufacturing labels. When I enter them here from the food menu, the serving sizes are not all the same. For instance, my package of trail mix from ALDI stated 1/3c is a serving, but the nutritional info added here states 1/4c in a serving. With trail mix that's MUCHO added calories per serving. Are food manufacture's trying to make American's Fat???

The most accurate way is to weigh everything using a food scale rather than relying on measuring cup sizes; it is a lot more accurate. Then go by what the packaging says. For example if a serving size says "1/4 cup (28 grams)" has 90 calories, weigh 28 grams and count 90 calories.

A lot of people are loath to do it but I measure virtually all my food items in grams using a digital dietary scale. I prefer not to use the "cups and liquid oz" method whenever possible. Some things I let slide like when a serving is "3 sausage links" or "One large AA egg", etc,; food items which are basically uniform due to the way they are prepared. "1/4th cup grated cheese = one serving"...well is that exactly level with the rim of the measuring cup? Or a little bit over? Do I smash the shredded cheese down until there is no air left? "28grams = one serving"...ahh thanks that is much easier.

You should also pay attention to what the serving size looks like - 4 oz. chicken, 1/4 cup cheese... That way when you dine out, you are more prepared for estimating!

LOL My hubby jokes that our kitchen scale gets WAY more action than he does. Problem is.....he's right!
