Sounds like a funny question..most people probably do, even though most people don't like following rules. However, I have figured out over time, making some basic decisions about my daily lifestyle choices..upfront...makes living them out day to day soooo much easier.
I always get such good stuff from this guy (Stephen Cabral, Nutritionist / Fitness Trainer). Hope you enjoy this…and ultimately, I hope you create your own ‘Fat Loss Rules’, and choose to live by them! After reading this..I realized this is very similar to what I have done…only my rules were centered around low carb. The more you look at ‘successful’ weightloss folks, and what worked for them…the more you begin to see similarities. So, make some decisions – and find your commitment to stick w/ it!
[Start]Fat Loss Rules, by Stephen Cabral
I was talking to a friend the other day and the topic of willpower came up. He asked me "how do you stay so disciplined?"
My answer was simple...
I responded by saying, "I don't have to think about most of my decisions, they've already been decided for me." It seemed this answer wasn't exactly what he was looking for so I figured I should explain. What I meant by "not having to think about my decisions" was that I have created a set of fat loss & healthy living rules that have now become ingrained in my brain.
When it comes time to choosing foods, my decisions have already been set by the rules I made for myself. If a food doesn't fit within my set of rules (my playbook), then don't eat it. It's that simple, but it wasn't always that way for me...
At first following the rules wasn't easy, but after about 3 weeks everything clicked and I just settled into a new healthier lifestyle. (This is the exact program I now pass along to all my studio and online clients as well, which has worked wonders for all of us.) Just like any new task, in the beginning it's difficult (mentally), but after about 21 days it's well worth it and the results train your brain to keep the routine going.
So what "my rules" do is give me a concrete and simple playbook for my life.
If a rule says, do "A," I do "A."
If it says don't do "B," I don't do "B."
(Genius, right? ; )
This makes life simple and I don't even have to think about all the choices then I have to make on a daily basis. Now before I lose you let me give you a few examples of the simple rules I set for myself.
5 of My Fat Loss & Healthy Living Rules:
1. I don't eat any food item with more than 7 grams of sugar unless it is directly following an intense workout.
2. I don't eat processed wheat or gluten based carbs
3. I limit my dairy consumption to 1-2 servings per day of Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or whey protein
4. I never drink my carbs - No juice, milk, energy drinks, etc. (except for using my own juicer and a daily protein shake)
5. I eat 1/4c of raw nuts for a mid morning snack every day to keep my blood sugar stable and keep my hunger cravings down
As you can see these rules are very simple and straight forward. In addition to these 5 rules I also have about 10 others that I use on a daily basis. Remember, having these fat loss & healthy lifestyle rules allow me not to have a debate with myself every time a snack or meal comes around.
At first glance you may think this is a hard way to make food decisions, but you have to trust me that it's far easier since it eliminates the majority of your choices right away and leaves you with a simple selection of healthy meal options.
Now let's talk about another part of the equation I think you'll like...
I have another rule that allows me to eat 1-2 cheat meals per week (but not on back to back days). This means I get to eat anything I want at this meal - including dessert.
This cheat or reward meal gives me something to look forward to each week when I walk by cafes everyday selling all sorts of delicious looking pastries...(Note: I do not have cheat meals if I'm doing a strict diet for 3 weeks)
I typically enjoy this reward meal Saturday nights when I'm out with friends or family, so if you see me at a restaurant eating pasta you can safely assume I am thoroughly enjoying myself ; )
Keep in mind these specific rules work great for me and you're welcome to copy mine or find ones that fit your life or goals. Also, I can't emphasize enough how much simpler your life will be when you decrease the amount of decisions you have to make on a daily basis.
It's amazing, and it's another reason why daily routines help people achieve their goals at a much faster rate. This is why I create rules for exercise, nutrition, healthy living, and many other aspects of my life. It removes a lot of the stress in my life and allows me to use my willpower and decision making in areas where it's more crucial. - [End]
Live, Love, Laugh ...make each day memorable and enjoy the journey.
