Diabetic Dieting

I was just recently diagnosed as prediabetic and noticed that there are alot of snack and drinks out there for diabetics.
My mom lost over 100lbs following a sugar busters diet to where she didnt have to use insulin, just pills sometimes.
Im using glucerna products for my snacks and just following a regular but low sugar diet. Im afraid to be on insulin becausei i hate needles.
My gluclose level was running about 215 in the morning fasting and now im in the 180s and its continuing to decrease.
Any tips to how to get this under control? Im working out 5 days a week also.

The thing you have to watch is carbs. You want to have a balanced diet and eat less, but more often...I eat about 5 to 6 times a day...three meals and two to three snacks, all spaced out by 3hr windows...so 7am breakfast, 10am snack, 1pm lunch, 4pm snack, 7pm dinner & sometimes I have a light snack between 9 & 10pm. The dietician told me to make sure I had something later in the evening, or your body will compensate for low sugar in the morning and your body will release extra sugar into your blood to "kick start" your day...so have a banana or other piece of fruit in the evening...I also try to avoid eating out (I'm not very good at that one yet...), and processed or boxed foods...I eat fruit when I have a sugar craving, try to drink a glass of water when I feel hungry instead of grabbing a snack...for me it's a bit of a habbit to snack when I am bored, so I try to find something interesting to do if I do get bored...read a book, do some research on a personal interest, exercise...do some household tasks (although this is not as high on the list as it should be!!)...I also drink lots of coffee with splenda (sweetener instead of sugar), I find the coffee takes the hunger away...Good Luck!! The easy solution is to eat whole, unprocessed foods, and avoid foods that spike your blood sugar levels. I've also heard great things from this book:

I think you are on the right track. I would agree with mikefarinha and try to go for whole foods. While you can keep some glucerna products around for convenience, these are processed foods and your body will respond better to whole foods.

My mom was diagnosed pre-diabetic and she does some regular mild exercise but also cut out most of her carbs. She has also lost weight in the process just by trying to get healthier. Now her blood sugar is normal without medication. It is a diet for life.

Tips for staying on track while dining out
If I have a planned dinner with family, I fast for most of the day. That way, even if I gorge on 2k calories at that meal, I am still well within my calorie limit.

Are there any folks dealing with food allergies?
I also have food allergies, and it is a constant struggle with reading ingredients or having to ask and trust people about what is in dishes that I do not prepare myself. Only good thing is that it keeps ...
