Found it... interesting. I really do need to go get bloodwork done. Then again, don't know how reliable this source is.

I do not fault you for wanting to become a vegan, but this life style is not for everyone. Atkins has consistently kept my blood sugar down (below 100) and I am very close to getting off my cholesterol meds. Nasty white bread will never pass my lips again.

It puzzles me that these ten test subjects as stated in the article decided to go behind the researcher's back and choose an Atkins lifestyle... and that they all did it at once. It makes me skeptical on the reliability of the article. I'm only 16 years old.. and I plan to continue with Atkins for the rest of my life. But what about the long term side affects? I don't want to have a heart attack or stroke at age 30! That's just.. terrifying.
Is there anyone reading this who's cholesterol levels have improved being on Atkins? I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance.

Actually yes, my levels improved dramatically in 6 weeks on Atkins induction in April of 2010. My total cholesterol dropped 300 points and a year later, 93 lbs lighter, my cholesterol STILL hasn't raised back to it's deadly level. We're talking cholesterol levels over 600. My cholesterol was like that for years (since my early 30's) They put me on statins at different times through my life but NONE helped. I just had a blood test this last week and all is goood. I even dropped my A1C to below diabetic levels. My Dr is very impressed.

I have done Atkins with succuess before, but at 54 I think W/W would be a better choice for me, as I tend toget all kinds of leg cramps and other complcation on Atkins not to mention I miss eating regular food with friends, it's to hard to socialize on Atkins unless your providing the food all the time.

That website is old - 2004 copyright. Most of the so-called experts back then frowned upon any diet that was low carb. I love how they call all the low carb studies non-peer review(I highly doubt Harvard Med is non-peer reviewed since most of the low carb research has come from there) and poorly constructed. This coming from someone who thinks Ancel Keys is a genius.

All of what is on this site has been refuted. But, go read the research articles and decide for yourself. That is the best way to know.

Personally, I did not have a cholestorol problem before I started Atkins and according to my last test, I still don't. I know alot of people who no longer have to take their insulin pills or statins after being on this diet. That to me speaks volumes.

@160to115 pounds - my cholestrol levels were getting on the high side and after 4 weeks of doing Atkins (when I was) my cholestrol levels lowered to a healthy level.

I have been doing atkins since march 28th of this year, and do not have any health problems b/c of it. Actually, like many people doing atkins, my health has improved. People will always be skeptic of any diet. If you go looking for problems with a specific diet, things will come up for any of them you enter, including being vegan. The proof is in people you know and talk to that have been doing a certain diet for awhile to actually show proof of their health. The most important thing to remember is don't believe everything you hear or read.
