I've lost 20 lbs!

I'm proud to say that I've reach a milestone in my weight loss journey. I've lost 20 lbs. 5 months ago I weighed 167 lbs and had 42% body fat on my 5'3" frame. I now weigh 147 and 35% body fat. What I've learned over the past 5 months may help someone, so I feel inclined to share.

1. Circuit workouts that incorporate strength, cardio and abs burn fat quickly and tone your entire body. I've been doing the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred workout DVD - $9 at Walmart. It has 3 levels/workouts, and each level is 20 min plus warm up and cool down.

2. Look at the quality of what your eating not the quantity. Many foods you think are "healthy" may be packed with calories, sugar, salt or fat. To really know whats in your food, you have to read the labels, and you absolutely must use a calorie counter. I found that a little "cheating" here and there added up quickly and was the reason I had plateaued at one point.

3. Get OFF the SUGAR! We are all sugar addicts. It's in everything that we eat from infancy. You have to clean house (and kitchen) and get ride of the items that contain large qtys of sugars (over 5 g). It sucks at first not having it, but you will see the difference in your food cravings once you get off of it. My appetite and cravings for sweets (once my fav foods) has significantly diminished.

4. Eat things that taste good. It sounds silly but if you like food like I do, you aren't going to keep a healthy diet if all you can eat is celery. Fortunately, I've found some low calorie, low fat/salt recipes that have satisfied both my tastebuds and my diet. Black bean soup, a berry protein shake (good for breakfast), and an yummy tomato, spinach and cheese omlet all around 300 calories or less. You can find many low cal/fat recipes on the web.

I'm ready to loose the next 20 lbs. Bring it on!

I agree with you on almost all counts, but there's another way to know what's in your food-- buy the ingredients and cook it yourself. I almost never read labels, but that's because I know what's in a carrot or a mango or a shrimp. If you haven't read Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food" you might enjoy it.

Great milestone! I'm with you on the shred and made it to level 3 before the doc told me not to do planks, lunges, or pushups b/c of an injury. I'm actually looking forward to having Jillian kick my but again once the doc clears me in a couple weeks. Smile

You're absolutely right about things that taste good- the goal is to be able to keep good eating habits for life and things don't have to be unhealthy to be yummy!

Great job!! I'm at almost exactly the same point (5'3 or 4, started at 169, just hit 147 this week) and it feels great! I find the success SO motivating. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing what you've learned with the rest of us.
