Hi, Could someone please inform me whether FatSecret can automatically calculate what the calories are in a new food type that I put into its system. When I check the nutritional values on products, they never have the calorie count, so I have to check on the web all the time, and this is very tedious. Rolling Eyes

It's not clear what you're asking.

FatSecret has a large database of foods and food products. If you eat something new, such as a carton of yogurt, there's a pretty good chance that FS already has the item in its database. If not, you can enter it in about two minutes based on the information on the label, and then share it so that everyone can use it.

If you're talking about things like carrots and rice and steaks, then yes. FatSecret almost certainly has it in the system. If not, you can enter it and then have it available for the future.

For recipes, you can either find something that approximates what you made, or enter your recipe yourself.

No - you cannot enter a food and have Fat Secret tell you what's in it.

As Hoser pointed out there is a very large generic database for types of food. These generic numbers cannot be changed by memebers. There is also a very large amount of information related to products you can buy in a store. These are member created and you have to double check them - I have corrected several entries because they did not match up to what was on the label of the product itself.

If you are eating unique foods you will have to input the values to begin with and it's in your best interest to do so.

Sorry if I haven't made myself clear. Let me try again. Sometimes when I can't find a food type or product in the FatSecret database [which I know and appreciate is exhaustive], I enter it myself and put ALL the nutritional facts that I find on the jar, for example, but the one thing I can never find is the calorie count, and because of this I have to look it up on the Net and it is time consuming because I know I have to get it right [for the sake of others].

Wow, really? I assume you're not in the US. Essentially all of our food products are required to have certain nutritional information on the labels, and calorie count is right there at the top.

Do your labels have energy in kilojoules? If so, divide that number by 4.184 and you'll get calories. For calories from fat, multiply the total grams of fat by 9.

I'm in Adelaide, Australia, which means that our processed foods etc don't have all the info I need to add the necessary criteria when adding new foods to the FatSecret database. Our products don't give kilojoules, calories from fat, or calories at all. So you see my frustratio!!

Try to find a simular food. If you are looking up jam and yours has like 5 carbs 5 sugars etc try to find jam with all the numbers you do have. I know its exhausting but once you have logged what you normally eat it will keep popping up under recently or most eaten food. That would suck to not have that information. I would say if you can find simular products your calories shouldnt be that far off.
Goals:
1. Eat the things I want; exercise when I want; make healthy choices; teach my kids a proper healthy lifestyle
2.Cover 600 miles(walk/run)from Oct 2010- Sep 5 2011--- Miles To date:63
3. Run 15K on Labor day
