Do you eat breakfast? How important is it?

I used to never eat breakfast. Or, I'd have a latte and a bagel (and the crash afterward). Now I try to get one carb serving (15g), one protein and one whole fruit each day--and having kiddos who demand breakfast makes it easier for me to do this.

I just saw this article from Fast Company on benefits of breakfast. Do you agree? How important has it been for your diet? From the nutrition science I read, the total calorie count is more important than "jumpstarting your metabolism" (and I don't see a lot of science backing that up) and eating breakfast helps people avoid overeating at lunch. I thought this might be a good topic for discussion.

I do eat breakfast, though often just a nonfat Greek yogurt. The other day I went to Zumba after only having a latte made with 1 cup of nonfat milk; my performance was off & I felt shaky after class. Cottage cheese & a fresh peach will really start my day off right. Much more than that and I'll feel nauseous when exercising hard. On my day of rest, I like starting off with oatmeal with fresh ground almond butter in it, or whole grain pancakes with bananas or blueberries & possibly some chopped walnuts or almonds. A veggie omelet is good, too. I went back & read the article; now I can say I agree with it. My partner doesn't understand why I don't want to go running around without breakfast; think I'll share this article. Surprised)

I am not aware of any research showing a causal link between skipping breakfast, and all of the conditions that are merely correlated with it. As such, it's yet another issue that I think should be left to personal preference. If eating breakfast, or a certain type of breakfast, helps with satiety and mood, or reduces overeating later in the day, then do it.

In the meantime, the value of correlation is...questionable:

This is a good topic and has made me thought about my own experience in the past few weeks. Before I would simply have a protein shake and be on my merry way to work. Then I decided to have solid food for breakfast; turkey sausage patty, eggs, and a little cheese. Since then I've noticed I've actually been hungrier through out the day and would break down and eat more. Hmm... makes me wonder if it's direct correlation or just a coincidence.

Maybe it's one of those "not one size fits all" things. For me, it seems to matter what my plans for the day are. If I'm going to be working or out running around, I've found that protein for breakfast is the way to go, otherwise, I crash about 10 AM. But if I'm just going to be hanging out at home, I'm good with just my coffee, then maybe an early lunchtime snack. I graze, so I may not be the best example of how to conduct normal eating habits Smile

Hi Baxie! I'm not much of a breakfast eater. Actually hate eating breakfast. I know it is a good way to get your metabolism kickstarted fast and early, and I agree with you that protein is the best way to fuel the body for the day ahead. Unfortunately, I can get down a cup of coffee and an Atkins bar, and that's about it. I'm doing my own diet too, and find that grazing with light fruits (usually berries) and veggies during the day help me feel satisfied, then a nice dinner with protein and veggies or salad for dinner works for me. I may need another Atkins bar during an enegetic day if I seem about to crash, then have a nice cup of sugar-free hot chocolate before bed. I *need* my chocolate fix with the Atkins bars and cocoa, or life wouldn't be worth living! lol

I have several times posted links to an interesting article about how two eggs in the morning significantly promotes weight loss.
I have done this the whole way of my weight loss journey, and had a very speedy (and fairly easy) loss. Whether it works or not, I don't know. I haven't really tried NOT doing it, as I really like my eggs in the morning. I combine it with rye bread and sliced ham. Plenty of fiber and protein for the day.
I will recommend this to anyone who'll listen. Whether it's for you, is of course up to you. Smile

Not much of a breakfast eater, but I make an effort to have something before I go into work.
Oatmeal or yogurt, even a sliced apple. It's hard for me to be consistent with it though.

I usually have .5 cup oats 100ml milk teaspoon of flaxeed and 100g yogurt. Seems to work well and keeps the hunger pangs away.

I'll be honest. I am not hungry in the morning. I am usually hungriest by mid day during lunch. I don't think you should force yourself to eat if you aren't hungry. Additionally, for me, I try and make Lunch the biggest (calorie wise) meal of the day for me. For dinner, I try to keep it as low calorie as I can...especially if I am eating after 7pm.
But I don't think you NEED to eat breakfast...its more of a personal preference.

Whenever i can I eat a big breakfast, that's the most important meal for me. If i have to go somewhere early in the morning than i just eat an apple since i don't have time for anything else. I don't go anywhere on an empty stomach.

I have been eating breakfast now since I started this journey. I didn't always used to eat breakfast and found that I was very hungry at lunch. Eating breakfast has helped me with energy in the morning especially on days that I can workout early in the day. I have been told by trainers that I need to eat before and after a workout, so when I workout in the morning I split the breakfast food around the workout. I have found that I have to give my body fuel for the workout, so I will usually have a little carbs first like toast and a couple of egg whites with bacon. After I usually have a banana, some other fruit or yogurt and then lots of water. I don't do it all the time, but have tried to stick with this. Even if I am not hungry before a workout, if I don't eat a little then I will not see the performance from my workout. Everyone has to decide what works for them though. We all have different bodies. Smile

I forced myself to eat breakfast for several months, it made sense to me to start the day with some fuel. I alway had to force myself to eat as I had no appetite that time of the day and I found that I was hungrier thoughout the day. Finally I gave it up and now have my first meal of the day when I'm hungry and perhaps a coincidence but I also broke through a plateau when I stopped eating breakfast. The only time I found I need to have breakfast is if I have to go out in the cold. When I worked in the arctic I found I was signifigantly warmer if I had a good breakfast.

I agree with Nimm comments above. If breakfast helps to tackle energy or satiety needs after wake up then it is the way to go otherwise skipping altogether and eating more later does not affect the diet as long as total calories stay the same.

I like breakfast because if do not eat it I get hungry by 10 and ravenous by 1 pm. I cannot eat animal proteins and eggs though because they make me fill too fool and bloated throughout the mornings, I prefer high fibers cereals with berries, banana and soya or almond milk. It is delicious, nutritious and fills me up for 4-5 hours without problems

I find that if I don't have breakfast the rest of my day is off. I just tend to wander through my food snacking trying to find the thing I am looking for. So do have it everyday. Be it a good egg breakfast or my morning shake. Makes a huge differnce for me.

honestly i tried both.. i used to eat breakfast religiously early on in my weight loss journey... but i would always get hungrier during the day and want snacks... now i pretty much eat when i'm hungry.. during the week i'm ok with a hot cup of green tea and make sure i'm hydrated.. if im hungry i will eat... usually not hungry till noon which is lunch time anyway. like one of the folks here said.. not all diets are one size fits all..

I had always heard that eat breakfast you'll lose more weight but it NEVER worked for me - I'd eat breakfast then I'd be starving all day long until that is I found out I was eating the wrong stuff.

Eating carbs for breakfast just starts you on the insulin roller coaster BUT eating proteins really does help. I am always in a rush in the morning so I make up a bunch of frittatas on Sunday night have them individually sliced and just keep them in the freezer until I want one. Then it's 30 seconds in the microwave and I'm out the door. Made a huge difference. I'd make one broccoli and cheese, one pepper, onion and tomato and the last one would be what ever was left over probably through in some sliced ham. They are delicious! If anybody wants the recipe message me!
