Your message popped up on my feed, and I can relate to it! Since this is a hormone issue (not just female hormones), you have to address how food affects hormonal responses. Calorie counting alone won't do it. Take a look at
http://www.dietdoctor.com
. I have been doing what he recommends, but I have to combine that with calorie counting. If you eat meat, it's easy to stick to. I feel your pain, it's so much harder to lose weight when you hit menopause age.

I have been having a tough time as well for the same reason. No reason to be scared. It is a natural thing to happen I think. You just have to be aware of it and work different strategies to keep yourself within acceptable parameters. Unfortunately there are no easy solutions
I also low carb - as my personal preference.
Hang in there and work it.

Had the same thing happen... gained 6-7 pounds a year over 7 years! Now trying to lose it. Just sticking to a sensible diet, lots of fruit and veggies and meats, getting out more - even in the winter, etc,. has helped a lot. I have lost 11 pounds in 4 weeks so far just by making simple changes and staying away from so many of the processed foods! Mind you, we still stop out now and again, my hubby likes BK (YUK!) and some days are just too busy with a live-in active grandchild in the mix... just limiting those moments when i reach for a box mix! i cook like we still have a big family, lots of soups and stews, non-cream based, and eat the leftovers all week at work.

I just posted this, while I'm not typically a watcher of Dr. Oz, this particular show dealt with just that--hormones going haywire. I've done much of what this woman suggests and am feeling great.

I also found this site which is very informative too.

Sometime before I started to have hot flashes, I had foot problems and had to stop exercising. So I never considered that menopause might have been one factor in the weight I gained in those years. Now that I am exercising again and have lost fat, I attempted to do some research to find out what a sensible target for body fat percentage might be, only to find that there doesn't seem to be any research done on post-menopausal women for that. I guess the assumption is that post-menopausal women aren't going to start eating healthy, losing weight, and exercising on their own. Or that there's no chance of improvement, only trying to minimize the inevitable decline. Pfft.

check out this blog:http://www.metaboliceffect.com/
This is what I'm doing right now:
drinking 3 liters of water a day
limiting carbs to 50g/day, eat in am and after workout
take fish oil and BCAA's
eat lots of fiber like salads and greens, cabbage etc
don't mix fat with carbs,
Interval training.
Good Luck!

I agree with not mixing fat with carbs for weight loss. I've lost a significant amount of weight in the past eating a high carb low fat diet & almost turned vegetarian filling up on fruit & vegetables. But hunger was an issue & thus cheating ensued. Also found I ended up having to eat every 3 hours to keep hunger under control.
30g of carbs
(empty hamburger bun).
Now I'm also losing a significant amount of weight on a high fat low carb (ketogenic) diet, hunger is less of an issue so cheating has been few & far between. & thus I'm finding I can stick to the normal 3 meals a day.
30g of carbs
(wholefoods).
It's not how much you eat it's what you eat!

ebivr - great visual! I think so many people try to lose weight by eating less of the same foods. I pointed out to my husband that a serving of my kid's goldfish crackers was more calories than my entire lunch (which was baked fish and a huge salad). I'd still be hungry after the goldfish crackers but was full/satisifed after eating fish/salad.
