Me and my friend placed a bet: whether we should consume coffee while trying to lose weight or not. What do you think? Do you know where we can find that out for sure? Thanks.

I reduced the amount of coffee consumed per day while I was on a diet. I was kinda sleepy for a few days, but I felt better after a period. However, you can find out more at Project Weight Loss. There`s an interesting article called Coffee: Friend or Foe. I found it useful when I asked myself the same thing a few months ago. I`m sure it will help you too Smile

Well I don't think it does much for losing weight. In fact, I read that it hinders weight loss and causes sugary cravings. I did give it up in the beginning of Fat Smash but I found that I can work out more intensely if I do drink it and it does help to curb cravings. So I would say drink in moderation is fine but too much caffeine is not good for you. I would be curious to find results. I would try The Doctors website or Oprah, they did tests about water and vitamins, etc. I'm someone has done it on coffee too.

I read in Skinny Bitch that it dehydrates you so that any water you are consuming that may be helping you lose weight is wasted. I sort of believe it but with 2 small kids and a full time job I didn't give up my morning cup of black coffee in the detox phase. I am 4 days in to detox and have lost 3lbs so I hope it's okay!

THANK YOU Fatsmasherli. I was wondering about the coffee because I also don't want to give it up on Phase 1. I had to start over again but giving up coffee is too hard. Glad to see you are doing so well, 3 pounds is great in 4 days.

You want to make sure to be caffeine free when you are doing your cardio. Caffeine restricts blood flow, so you'll feel fatigued much faster than without it. I always do my cardio, drink my water, then reward myself with a mug of coffee... without sugar, of course.

I've lost 43 lbs. without skipping my morning coffee & cream [no sugar or sugar substitute]. I only started putting 2% milk instead of cream this February. Because coffee is known as a dehydrant, you need to ensure you consume plenty of plain water to compensate and stay hydrated. But, mind you, I don't drink 5-6 cups of coffee a day like some people do.

As far as calories are concerned, coffee by itself has no calories but like everyone else has mentioned, caffeine will have an effect on the body though.

I'm down 81 lbs and working on the last 19 now. I've drank coffee everyday of my weight loss journey. Of course each person is different and will have to see how it affects them.

Looks like mixed reviews on coffee buy the community.
If you can't live without it then by all means have it. Just drink an extra glass of water to deal with the diuretic properties of coffee.
Cut back to 1-2 cups per day.
Reduce the amount of sugar and cream that you put in it.
Do an extra ten minutes of cardio and your all set.

weight loss = cals in < cals out

coffee has 0 cals when black and sugarless... use skimmed milk and sweetener if you must.

I hate the taste of coffee, but I'm a proponent of it. If you drink it black (or with stevia & skim milk), it can boost your energy, encouraging you do move more. Also, it has many other benefits!

This article, which is authored by doctors and which references scientific studies, gives many reasons why caffeine can hurt your weight loss goals:

http://www.teeccino.com/PDFs/weightloss.pdf

The main thing seems to be that drinking caffeine causes your body to create cortisol, a stress hormone, which causes your body to hold onto fat, especially abdominal fat:

"Chronically elevated blood cortisol levels that are caused by frequent stress or regular caffeine or
coffee intake lead to an increased buildup of fat in the abdominal area; this type of weight gain
further stimulates the release of additional stress hormones."

However, as other people have posted, coffee does also give you energy for a longer workout. And it contains certain antioxidants. So my guess would be that one or two cups (a cup being 6oz, not a large at Starbucks) a day--not loaded down of course with cream, sugar, flavored syrups, etc--isn't so terrible.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.

I love my 8 to 10 cups of coffee in the morning, but the closer I get to losing the last 20lbs the more hypoglycemic I seem to be. This morning I gave it up completely.

Drink lots of water. If you can, try drinking the Benefiber packets in your bottled water. It keeps you feeling full which helps during the detox phase and it helps with bloat, belly fat, and energy.
