On a whim I bought some Turmeric seasoning after hearing something about it helping reduce/prevent cancer and I have to say that this is an amazing seasoning!

It can be put on a lot of various types of foods and my biggest surprise was when I was making a salad at work I didn't have any salad dressing but I did have a bottle of olive oil on hand. I sprinkled my salad with Turmeric and then poured strait olive oil over it... it was actually quite amazing!

Anyone else use Turmeric and/or have any advice on how else to use it?

I've used it in a number of Indian dishes- made this one last week and it was very good: http://www.cookingchanneltv.com/recipes/cauliflower-with-sweet-potatoes-recipe/index.html

I've also used it with a bunch of other spices to make a simmered chicken dish that was really good, but I can't find the link at the moment.

I use it in my daily morning eggs in addition to traditional Asian dishes. It is practically impossible to taste it in eggs, as it does not change color or flavor too much. I read that it becomes more bioavailable in presence of piperine - active ingredient in black pepper so I add that too. You can add it to any stews or soups, unless you add any other traditional Indian ingredients, it mostly changes color but not the taste.

I use turmeric all the time, often in Indian food but in other things as well.

It's a type of ginger. I buy fresh turmeric root when I can, and use powdered turmeric when I don't have fresh on hand.

Hoser, where do you buy fresh turmeric? We have plenty of Indian and Asian stores around, but I have never seen fresh turmeric, may be I just did not know what to look for. How do you use it, when it is fresh, grated, or in slices? Just curious. New food, spices and around the world cuisine is my hobby, unfortunately not very well compatible with dieting Smile

Ingria, I buy it at the Berkeley Bowl. It's a grocery store in Berkeley California that has an extremely good produce section. If you have Indian groceries with a good produce section, they may well have fresh turmeric. It's easy to overlook.

I grate it, just like I would fresh ginger.

Thanks, Hoser. I also leave in BA Smile though on Peninsula. I believe I even heard of that particular store from my friends. I think I should be able to find fresh turmeric closer to my home too. Just could not pass on something I never tried before.

It goes well with cumin too. Turmeric and cumin are also both ingredients in curry powder, which is another great option (I like to throw some curry powder in a stir fry for some extra flavour).
