What is better for losing weight: weightlifting or jogging?

In the absence of an effective diet, most people do not lose much weight from exercise alone. People who do not exercise can and do reach their goal from diet alone.

Imo you have to exercise more and eat less to effectively lose weight. Exercise can be a combination of weight training and cardio. And this must be performed as a lifestyle not just on temporary basis. There is no quick solution to weight loss.

Exercise reduces the loss of lean tissue while restricting calories which is good thing and avoids the skinny fat dilemma of being slim looking but with lots of body fat


i think a combo of resistance and cardio is best , in fact a weight circuit combining both is very good but in the end doing something is better than nothing

we are designed to walk, run , lift etc, do it on a regular basis

You need a mix of all of it. Cardio to keep your heart strong enough to pump blood while doing resistance training. And resistance training to build muscle for burning fat. It all works in harmony along with a decent diet.
Heart rate up(cardio), heart rate down(resistance)... repeat.

Jogging is similar to walking in that it can be done anytime and anywhere.
Jogging controlled in heart, improves muscle strength and relieves stress.
Jog is time conviniant.

It's been my experience that both are necessary. Jogging provides good cardio if done properly. I suggest interval running/jogging where you run/jog for a period of time (30-45 seconds) with walking mixed in (10-15 seconds). This trains you body when to burn carbs and fat.

Peforming resistance or weight training helps your body to build muscle which also increases your metabolism and provides for a residual calorie burn as your body repairs itself. The key for weight loss is to pick weights that allow you to do higher reps. Weight training to muscle failure will increase strength, but not necessarily be as beneficial for weight loss. I usually go for about 60% of my max and go for a set period of time (20-30 seconds) for my sets, trying for max reps while keeping proper form.

Keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat, so as you get leaner from weight training, you may actually GAIN weight. Don't listen to the scale, it lies. Listen to the mirror, and the tape measure. I've always found a mix of cardio and weight training to be best. I gained a lot of weight lately from, well, mostly being lazy after back problems, so I'm getting back into being healthy again. I hate going to the gym, so I use my old physical therapy bands at home for resistance.
