Has anyone tried substituting a shake/bar for dinner instead of lunch? It makes more sense to pile up the calories from the regular meal earlier in the day, but don't know anyone who's tried it.

And now that I think about it, probably won't work for me since family dinner time is pretty sacred in my home. Not sure I'm crazy about sitting there with my shake watching DH & the kids eat...especially since I do most of the cooking, lol.

Still would like to know if anyone's tried it & if so, what did you think about it?

it doesnt matter when you eat the calories that you eat. so if it works better to eat more calories at lunch, go for it. i think that the slimffast idea is that for most people the easiser meals to substitue are breakfast and lunch, because of the family dinner thing.

i used slim fast a while back and sometimes i would have my big meal at lunch if i had lunch plans with someone so i didnt miss out on the fun social times at lunch. but usually it was easier to have a regular dinner.

I tried tapering calories throughout the day. I would eat heavier earlier and slow down as the day progressed. Didnt work for me, I felt hungrier in the evening, so I am back to what I was, 3 meals, 2-3 snacks within my cals limit.

I dont see why replacing a meal with a shake, a snack yes, I use a protein shake as a snack once a day and thats all.

Appreciate the feedback all!

@anapdc, the shakes are actually working pretty well for me since my problem was drinking coffee all day long & not eating anything at all. A quick shake or meal replacement bar is easier to work into my busy day than a complete meal. I'm also generally rushed in the mornings because I am not a morning person, so packing a lunch is a whole lotta business added on. A shake or bar fit right in my purse. Smile

I do enjoy our family dinner time together so I'll probably stick with that, though sometimes we eat a late dinner due to poor planning on my part, lol. I think if I can get that in order I can avoid going to bed on a full stomach.

white flour, bread, pasta, potato

I will make this breif since the system refreshed and deleted my post...ugh.

Here's my two since on the subject. Background: figure athlete (currently in competition season), long time crossfitter and follow paleozone diet.

I agree with bash73 about the fact that you should not have the processed foods, especially going paleo. However, there are some times when I need to take a quick protein shake to supplement the traditional "real food" route. I say "supplement" on purpose. I feel that a protein shake or bar should never be used to replace food. It is just an easy route to get an amount of protein, or for someone that is trying to avoid the binge "snacking" that often accompanies the hungry athlete who is on the run.

For me protein bars are pretty much a no go because it doesn't fill me and I have not been able to find one that fits into my nutritional needs. However, for those of you that have to go this route a rule of thumb that I use is to make sure the protein is at least 1 or 2 grams more than the carbs. Therefore, I don't look so much at the calorie content it's the protein/carb ratio. Fats are not the enemy - it's the fact that carbs (while we should limit these at all costs going paleo) turn into fat if not used...carbs cannot repair muscles like protein can. The nutritional density of a carb is no where near what protein is. Not to mention protein and carbs containing a lot of fiber keep you full for longer (for those of you that just have to use it as a meal replacement).

The long and the short of it: Go for protein shakes that are at least 18g protein per serving, protein bars that have a carb/protein ratio that is at least 1-2g more than the carbs.

If you are using this as a meal replacement, skip the slimfast and other brands out there and go for a homemade or magic bullet shake with protein powder, almond milk (to make it creamier) and a high fiber nutrient dense fruit. Add flaxseed for add'l benefits.

Hope this helps!

I love my protein shake. I have one every morning. 2 scoops gets me 50g of protein, Zero carbs and Sugars and 210 calories. I mix it with OJ, its Mango Peach flavored.

To be totally honest, I never drink a shake to replace a meal. WHy? It DOESNT fill me up. Protein shakes should be used to get extra protein into that particular meal. It may be a salad your eating that doesnt have meat on it or enough protein, so thats when you take it, so that you dont have to eat a whole Chicken breast.

Thats how you should be using these protein drinks. I agree with Aubrey. It doesnt make sense to skip entire meals and replace them with shakes. Calories are calories. Why would I want to not give myself 400 calories of REAL food and instead go with a shake? It doesnt do anything for my hunger! No food goes into your belly and thats when we get hungry and over eat.

Better to eat every 3 hour or so, little snacks in between your meals, stay at the RDI calorie wise that you want to be at to drop the amount of weight you want to lose per week. Its all about calorie deficit. Create your deficit and in the long run it will all come off your body. =)

I'm not a big breakfast-eater in the first place so I actually prefer the shake or bar vs. a "real" meal & that works for me & I don't find I'm still hungry after. Though I don't pay attention to protein grams specifically, I do refer to the food pyramid to make sure my snacks & dinner fill in all the spaces. I agree that making my own protein shakes would probably give me a better quality shake than Slimfast, but realistically I'm just not going to do all that in the morning so it's still better than not eating at all.

I have found that the pure protein protein bar is a really protein bar that sometimes acts like my supplement. It has 20g of protein, 16g of carbs and 2g of sugar. My favorite flavor by far is chocolate peanut butter.
