I am looking for foods to add to my weekly shopping list that are low calorie and diabetic friendly. I jus found out i am borderline diabetic, so i have to change the way i eat. I have found a few things that i really like, but not really enough to have good variety. Any help you could give me on low cal staples would be great. Also i am a breastfeeding mother, so no gassy foods. Thanks so much.

My only suggestion would be to contact your local diabetic association. They should have some literature on a diabetic diet/foods.

Food is low in calories only as a function of portion size, which is often manipulated in advertisements and on labels to deceive customers into buying overly processed foods and eating too much of them.

Eat more vegetables of all sorts, but primarily non-starchy vegetables. Avoid sugar and sweet foods. Eat natural whole foods prepared from basic ingredients as much as possible, avoiding processed and refined foods.

I usually buy big bags of mixed frozen veggies from Costco. While not 'fresh', they taste great and are quick to prepare, and help fill you up. Too often my fresh veggies went bad before I ate them (big $ waste)

I've also been buying Tofu and making stir-fry with it and veggies.

Are you eating eggs? Very flexible food with so many ways to prepare.

I have found that I can thaw frozen veges in a collander by running cold water over them, then stir fry them then they don't get as soggy as boiling them does

My husband was told at a well man check up that he was borderline too. The main thing to do is to avoid refined sugar, he always ate family bags of candies/jellies/etc. He has stopped eating them and although he still has the occasional treat he now has fun sized treats not family sized, the doc suggested he ate more wholemeal so we changed our bread, and basically we both now eat much more basic food, grilled or baked meat fat removed, veg and plain potatoes with skins on, and he tries to avoid anything ready made that has more than 5 ingredients because that often means it has been messed about with. thanks everyone.. i am doin great on my 1500 diabetic diet, only because i am afraid of diabetes, cause my family has it and i have seen how harmful it can be) from the day i was told i was borderline diabetic i have lost 11 lbs and am feeling great, my sugar no longer spikes and bottoms out.. and i love getting to eat 6 small meals a day to keep my sugar in check. i have changed the way i eat.. but also the way i live, i dont think of myself as on a "diet" , i just found a new way to live.

I'll second the frozen vegetables. studies have shown they've retained more of their nutrients then fresh vegetables. who knows how long it took for fresh vegetables to arrive at the store & how long they've been sitting in the bins. frozen vegetables are flash frozen soon after they're picked, so they're really better.

I make a wrap at lunch with 1 c. of spinach, 1 TBS of olive-oil reduced fat mayo, 3 slices deli turkey, onion, tomato, black olives, mild banana peppers, cilantro, s&p, and my blood sugar reads below 100. Low glycemic fruits Apricots, apples, pears, peaches, plums, kiwi and all sorts of berries as berries have the least impact on blood sugar than any other fruit. Always eat fruit with protein to stay balanced. Always eat a carb with protein too!

Sweet Potatoes are good as they digest slowly & control blood sugar and controls hunger pangs. String beans, broccoli, baby spinach & romaine have more vitamins and minerals than iceberg, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms. If you have a potato have a red one as they have less starch.
