I know it's a good idea to restrict your drinking to two a week max (1 if you're a woman) but I am a drinking enthusiast. I LOVE beer and will often trade out that for actual food. I have at least one glass of red wine a week with dinner and when the weekend comes, I'm usually out dancing with friends, downing at least three cocktails before I know it. Does anyone have any pointers for restricting alcohol usage? I've tried more than once assigning myself Designated Driver so I don't drink at all, but once I get home, I just grab a beer from the fridge and wait for sleep to come. Does anyone else have this problem? Is this one of those things I have to grow out of? (I'm 23)

Do you work out? I find after a good workout having a drink just doesn't sound as good... That in of itself limits consumption.

When I do get the urge lately its Vodka and Diet Cranberry Sierra Mist. Pretty guilt free as far as the calories go...

Careful, sounds like the beginning of alcohol addiction. Alcohol is an addictive drug. If you find you CAN'T say no, that's a big red flag. If you decide not to drink, but then you drink anyway, that's another. If you aren't careful, you could find yourself with bigger problems.

Trading beer for food is not a good idea.

Now that I've said all that, I'll tell you, I drank like a fish from when I was 19 to when I was 29-30. And it took a big toll on me. It was "fun" I guess (not that I remember a lot of it) but I missed out on other things that would have been fun too. And I usually felt pretty crappy for most of the day until it was bar o'clock. If I could go back in time and redo it, I'd limit my drinking to Friday and Saturday night and I would limit the number of drinks on any given night. But there's no way I could go out to a bar and not drink, so I would have to find other ways to spend my time.

k8yk: I can't really drink on weekdays because of home responsibilities (cooking breakfast for the fam, school, work, etc). When I say I have A glass of red wine with dinner during the week, I mean it. Doing a self evaluation of my drinking habits: yes, I drink every day of the week. And no, it's not budding alcoholism. The only thing my drinking has gotten in the way of so far is my weight loss goals. This is why I'm looking for tips to reaffirm that "NO" that I need. Do you have any other ideas?

BTW, Vodka and Diet Cranberry Sierra Mist???? O.O That sounds just DANGEROUS. It's a good thing I don't like soda and/or cranberry and I'm allergic to aspartame.

Moderate drinking is actually healthy from what I've read. The question is what is moderate. I think a drink or two a day isn't a big deal.

The only thing I could suggest for you concerning losing weight as it relates to drinking is that either you stop drinking until you hit your goal weight or give up food calories for alcohol calories. I would suggest giving up the drinks until you hit your goal. When we restrict calories, we need all of the nutrition we can get. Alcohol is empty calories.

I rarely drink so I'm no expert here, but I have read that a good option if you want a drink is to order a wine spritzer. I believe that's just a "shot" of wine in club soda, so you're consuming a lot less alcohol and calories that way while still getting the taste of wine and getting to have the drink in your hand, etc.

I'm the same way - I love a glass of wine with dinner then have cocktails when I'm out with friends... What I've started is I like to drink Absolut Citron and Club Soda (with a lime) - and then I try to alternate or throw in the occasional lemon or lime sparkling water... they taste fairly similar and then you can still drink your water while going out, nobody will know the difference, and even with alternating - chances are you'll get a buzz. That's as close of a solution i've come up with without cutting out booze all together. College and the bars after college is where I've gained my extra 30#... GOOD LUCK!

Now that I've joined this site and committed to losing weight, I have to watch things a little more carefully. I just started beer journaling (I taste and blog about various craft beers and mircrobrews), and I'm usually drinking beer every night. Some of these beers are pretty exotic, running upwards of 300 calories each. But I just budget those calories into my plan for the day and make sure the beer won't put me over.

I've just started this, and if it turns out the beer is holding me back, I'll either just up the exercise or drink less beer.

A glass of red wine everyday is actually good for you.

Women can have 1-1.5 drinks (not all drink such as frozen sugary margarhita) a day. Men can have 2-3 drink a day. This is fine, if you are worried about alcoholic intake. However for caloric intake, you should be aware of the calories in each drink.

Oh when i do drink alcoholic beverages, i follow it up with red clover tea later that night. It helps your liver metabolize faster...

Take small portions....it helps and once u get used to it, u dont miss eating more...cooking a small amount also helps so theres no leftovers..
