Hi there I just joined today for the first. I am currently 322. I have a 5 month old soon to be 6 months on the 1st. I am still nursing part-time. I desperately need to lose weight without a crazy exercise schedule. I was 289 when I got pregnant and at 352 at delivery. I have never been this heavy. I have gained so much weight over the past couple of years with my sit-down office job. Can anyone give some advice on how to get started.

Welcome! I hope you're off to a great start. My advice would be:

1) get a book...I got "Living the GI Diet by Rick Gallup." You can google and find out a lot of information online, but it's helpful to have a foundation of what you are doing and why for your frame of reference. The book I got describes WHY there are benefits to eating this way, gives tips, and also has some recipes to get you started.

2) get the "bad" food out of your sight! I cleaned out my fridge, freezer, and pantry, (leaving one shelf on each for my husband--who does not need to lose weight- to fill with his favorites that are off limits for me). I can't afford to eat out a lot, so if I only have healthy foods in the house that is all I can eat!

Healthy weight loss is not about how quickly you can lose weight, but it's about changing your eating habits and incorporating some form of exercise so that over time, your body weight will decrease naturally. So be patient with yourself and try not to get frustrated when things don't go well. You'll eat healthy a few days then you may have a day where everything you eat is totally wrong. But guess what? You're still on a diet! The diet don't stop just because you ate bad that day. Just start back eating healthy again according to your plan. So I would say to you and anyone who's getting started is to have patience when trying to lose weight. Take baby steps so you can let your body adjust to change. If you don't exercise, or is not an athletic type person, don't try to jump into strenuous exercises from the get go. Ease into exercises by just doing some stretching and flexibililty movements for a couple of weeks. Then later add some walking after stretching. As far as diet, read the plan in your book and follow it. Don't try to create your own version of the plan (that's why you chose the plan because you see it fits you), but do it to the tee. For weight loss, make small goals. Try making small goals like lose 1 to 1.5 lbs a week for a few weeks. Then bump it up a bit later on. Trust me, the same thing you did to lose 1 to 1.5lbs will most likely be the same things you'll have to do to lose 10 to 50+ lbs...which is maintaining discipline.

Rick Gallops book is excellent. I really didn't know where to start, but I followed the GI diet to the letter and just 4 months later I feel like a new man. Actually, I felt great after the first week.... but once you've started, the important figure seems to stop being how much you WEIGH NOW, but rather how much YOU'VE LOST. Losing weight isn't easy and it will probably mean changing habits that you've had for years! But there are plenty of people here going through the exact same thing. YOU CAN DO IT. Good luck!
