I went for a twice-a-week kinda thing, with a 600 calorie intake (400-500 for the ladies) on the "fasting days". I stopped it only because I couldn't tell whether I had any kind of different weight loss at the time, and I have a deadline to reach a certain weight on a certain date.

Jury is definitely still out on whether I like it or not, but I do like the health benefits of it.

Once I have reached my goal weight (on time!) and I have moved on from that, I plan to use my modified version to maintain my weight.

thanks for that - I am in week 2 of the diet - is tough but i am hoping to benefit from some of the health benefits associated with the diet as well as lose weight. There is just a little bit of me worried that it maybe more hype then truth!

What worries me the most about doing it, especially every other day, is that I need a system that is sustainable - and I frankly don't see NOT eating every other day as being even remotely sustainable for me. Twice a week - if I get to choose which days - I think I can handle that. No more than that. Then again, accordingto the Horizon show, that's all we really need.

Ive been doing the 5:2 and am finding it is going pretty well. The weight is coming off so I might drop to 6:1 shortly as at this rate I might disappear if I stayed on it!

Dr Michael mosley was the guy on horizon - he has a book out now which I have ordered from the library but am n a waiting list as its v popular!

Feel free to check out my journals or food diaries (i only record fast day food) to see how I am getting on - as its a bit up and down at times but I am dealing with a lot of stuff at the mo

I work in an office, so sit down all day and have a really sedentary lifestyle. Its really important to do the alternate days so that the fast shocks the body into using stored fats. I have adjusted my recommended daily intake as well, because I think I was overeating for my lifestyle. I now have to combine this with high impact exercise that lasts for 3 minutes each day and let you know how I get on. Am happy to buddy up with you all as I have just returned to Fat secret after stopping due to an injury. I have two teenage kids, married for 14 years and love cats(not everyone's cup of tea I know)and I am studying as well. Could do with some support. Smile

At present there are no serious studies on humans showing the effect of fasting, but just animal tests and some epidemiological studies. Some studies on rats and monkeys seem to support the theory that a reduced calorie intake slows down aging and degenerative processes.

I will try it for 8 weeks and see what happens. My only worry is that by concentrating the deficit on fewer days it might affect negatively my fat loss and end up making me loose more lean body mass than fat.
I will try to track it with my fat analyser next time I weigh once I achieve a deficit of 30 k cal

I am doing it mainly for the health benefits but haven't had any tests yet to see if it is working. However I feel good and I am losing weight at about one pound a week. I am on a 1300 calorie diet and fasting is great because it gives me 1600 spare calories to use at the weekend. I make sure I have the equivalent of 1300 calories per day over a week. Fat secret makes this easy to do as I just make sure my average daily calories are around 1300 at the end of a week.

personally i often dont eat before midday as i dont feel hungry in the morning and prefer to eat later on, i wouldnt calling it fasting more delayed eating,

if you eat soemthing every day are you actually FASTING?

I read somewhere to benefit from a fast you would have to fast for at least 18 hours, as 18 hours is enough to use up your glycogen (sugar) stores in your liver without touching the glycogen stores in your muscle.

Also read that low carb diets cause the body to slow down (almost like a fast), promoting longivity, while high carb diets promote fertility & athleticism from the vast amount of carbs / energy available to functions at a higher physical level.

So if someone was fighting an illness, say like cancer, a fasting or low carb diet would slow it's growth. But if someone was trying to have a baby, not only would a low carb diet make it harder to conceive but would also affect the growth & birth weight of the baby.

Fasting is nothing new with cultures and religions having been doing it for over a thousand years. There are plenty of studies both on humans and animals. It has been taken on as a tool for weight loss as a tool due to its side effect of assisting the loss. On the whole a fast is between 12 and 18hrs as this causes no adverse effects to a body with regards to nutrient levels. Most people can go for 12hrs with only a few hunger pangs. As with any tool it has to be used win a way that supports your goal. It can also be a lifestyle choice if that is a route one is happy with.

It is not easy and quite expensive to do studies of this type because they would require quite a lot of people and some degree of control over their intake.

I have just completed 2 weeks and my first remarks are that it is relatively easy to eat around 600kcal especially when I am busy, but the following day I tend to overeat. Still overall so far I managed to keep a modest deficit.
I have not yet checked my blood because I want to wait 8-10 weeks if possible, but this week for the first time my blood pressure has gone consistently below 90 (diastolic). Maybe it is just a coincidence but so far so good.

I would raise to about 850 after two weeks Paperiniko. 600 is usually only recommended for the first 2 weeks. I check my blood pressure regularly mine was slightly high when i started and now its ideal but i can't put it down to the fasting as my weight has decreased and fitness levels are up. I will see if i can hunt the studies down but it was a few months ago that i read them and they were not long term effects just short term

i am not a low carb person, quite the opposite and my overall weekly calorie intake has not changed I just redistributed them with two days very low and the rest higher so I am not entirely sure that glycogen is the cause
