I am going on 7 weeks now on the Atkins plan and it has been nothing but constant frustrations Evil or Very Mad I started off well by losing 12 lbs during induction Very Happy then my weight has just fluctuated between 215.3 to 220.7. I thought I was sticking to the plan because I have never been a big eater. My weakness has always been sweets so I added Atkins bars, shakes, and sugar-free jello with heavy cream. I'm pretty sure now that explains why my weight hasn't budged. Last night, I read all I could on Atkins and one blog I came across on another site just opened my eyes! Someone had asked the same question I keep asking myself over and over again and even though I have read 2 Atkins books completely, one women said it best. She explained that when she was in induction, she ate 'CLEAN' meaning, NO Atkins shakes, bars, artificial sweeteners, soda, heavy cream etc... Embarassed She said that since you are only allowed no more than 20 net carbs, she used them solely for vegetables, LOTS OF VEGETABLES and ate only WHOLE FOODS; meat, eggs, veggies, salads and LOTS OF WATER. She kept her fat intake high and added olive oil to salads which is VERY HEALTHY. She stated that within a few days, her cravings subsided and she was always full and satisfied and the weight just dropped off and continues to drop. A light bulb went off in my head Idea and I realized that there are no shortcuts. Having an Atkins shake in the morning is NOT 'real' food and i needed to make changes NOW so as of today, NOV 1, 2012, I am starting over by taking this women's GREAT ADVICE and the most sound advice I have come across so far. I know the Atkins plan works and even though they make tasty products, it is not food.Doubt They are snacks that I just don't need right now as long as I am in induction. They also tend to spike my cravings, especially at night. WISH ME LUCK because I am so determined to lose this weight and keep it off. Wink The Atkins Plan works if you follow it correctly. I want to make it a part of my life ; )Very Happy

A lot of people have problems with the Atkins bars and shakes. I've heard from A LOT of people that it stalls them out completely. I can tell you that after about a week or two of eating whole, real foods that my sugar and carb cravings went completely away. Also, you should check out yourlighterside.com. She has a TON of recipes that are absolutely delicious and quite a few of them are induction friendly. I'm not doing Atkins, but I am doing a low carb, lower calorie diet that resembles Atkins a great deal.

Yes, you are exactly right, following the Atkins plan does work if you work it correctly! Very Happy Getting into the habit of eating "clean" food is a great idea! And the right one! During those first two weeks of Induction, I ate meat and vegetables. LOTS of salads! And drank plenty of water. Normally 3 or 4 of those 16.9oz bottles a day, sometimes more. actually says that you should get 12-14 of your 20 net carbs from veggies.

Also, take a look at this article. It explained a lot of things for me and it gives good suggestions for meals and snacks. The article isn't geared towards the Induction Phase, but it gives a nice overview of a low-carb/high-fat regimen.

You are so correct! I ran into the same issue when I included the Atkins bar and shakes in my diet as well. I only had 2 shakes this week and that was to get them out of the house and I lost 2.5lbs.

I am defintely striving toward cleaner eating as I still incorporate heavy cream. But it was nice to see the scale moving down.

I am right along with you and you ABSOLUTELY can do it!!!

Atkins works wonders .. all you have to do is follow it correctly. I get tired of hearing people say it doesn't work, then I look at their food diary and see all kinds of foods they aren't supposed to be eating and little to no veggies/fiber. Stick to the Allowable Food list.

Water is more important than most realize while on Atkins. Your liver burns up fat cells and produces ketones which enter the blood stream and your body uses them for fuel instead of glucose. Excess ketones are toxic to your kidneys so you must keep them flushed out.

Even though you read bacon is ok while on Atkins I didn't eat too much. I used turkey bacon for the protein and flavour. If you have to have your bacon eat the natural type with no added Nitrites and low sodium. If you look up food to never feed children it is hot dogs because of nitrites and future cancer risks down the road. There is also lots of nitrites in processed lunch meats. Good thing is now there are nitrite free products on the market.. look for them.

Take potassium supplements if your getting leg cramps.

Add spinach to your daily large leafy green salad to help lubricate your intestines and avoid constipation along with your water.

Make sure you take a good multi vitamin, omega 3, calcium w/ vit D, vitamin B100 complex.

You shouldn't be hungry all the time if your following the program correctly.
I went through the stages correctly and lost over 100 lbs and have kept it off over the past 2 years. I slowly transitioned to a regular diet with the following changes from the way I was eating before I started Atkins.
Except for the special occasion:

No more white bread, white pasta, white rice, white potatoes. I still don't eat corn. It converts to sugar when you eat it and most people put butter and load salt on it. Leave corn alone so it can be used to make bio fuel, corn sweeteners to make fat people fatter. Also think about it... farmers feed their livestock lots of corn to fatten them up just before they go to the slaughter house. Avoid sugar like the plague and sugar substitutes as well. Now I eat berries of all kinds and low glycemic fruit. No fruit juice aka liquid candy.

If you follow the stages properly and slowly re-introduce carbs back into your daily meals and learn what carbs pack on fat with no or little nutrition you'll be setting yourself up for a great healthy long life and you wont be on any diet. This is the point where I am at. I can eat anything I want now I just have learnt how much and when I can get what I'm really craving so I never deprive myself of anything.

Make Google your friend to assist you on learning what foods can prevent cancer, heart disease, inflammation ect. Educating yourself for free on proper nutrition is priceless.

I wish that piece of crap food pyramid the United States Department of Agriculture tells everyone to follow was done over by an intelligent nutritionist.
Far too many of our children are over weight or obese. This starts with the food the parents are buying and feeding them and the food the schools are feeding them. Someone needs to step up and teach our kids the proper way to live. Not feed them crap so they'll be looking at diabetes and heart disease when they get into their mid 30's. Thats what is going to happen unless things change now, not tomorrow.

I hope some of those reading this will learn something and follow my advice and forgive a bit of a rant, but thats how I feel and I don't usually hold back when I have something important to say.
