I am new to Atkins and hoping to lose weight. I plan to weigh myself in 14 days from starting and today is day 3 but I just started counting calories yesterday and was blown away at my calorie intake...OVER 2000 and net 22 grams of carbs. I am worried, what if I am gaining. Maybe that's too many calories.
I work from home (sitting at my desk) and exercise (yoga, walk, exercise class) about 3 to 5 x's a week.
My weight is around 162 and I like to get to 150. Like I said I have been on this diet now for 3 days and yesterday, my pants felt tight...I hope that is not a bad sign. I like to stay away from the scale so I don't obsessed as I usually would do. Thanks for your input.

Calories are not counted on Atkins, carbs are. I have not found that any calorie count affected my wieght loss but the amount of carbs in, did.If you are not loosing I would look at the carb grams. Use uncooked measurements, be precise, look for hidden carbs.

Part of the goal of low-carb diets is to learn to listen to our body's hunger signal. Most carbs tend to hyperstimulate our appitite and cause us to over eat. Hopefully you've read the book and are following the advice as written.
Also 3 day's isn't that much time. It has taken us a long time to accumulate excess fat and it won't come off over the weekend
. Wait a month and then reevaluate if this diet is for you.

Great tips. Thanks everyone.
I have noticed a more full feeling and that, in the past, says I am eating too much. I also don't make big breakfast but when I look back, I use to eat low carb and big breakfast and was able to keep my weight down.
Then life changed and my weight climbed, and oh my thyroid bottomed out too. STill trying to get that equalized...Well, patience it is. LOTS of it too...

Hey Tina. I'm typically around 1500 calories per day. Although I don't "count" them, they're still important. A quick look at your food log and I can make 2 comments for you - 1. You're not getting enough vegetables - you should get at the very least 10nc per day from veggies - try tracking them as snacks to make sure you're getting enough and 2. You should keep cheese limited to 3 oz. per day. This is a great site and you'll find a lot of good advice here. Good luck!

It is shocking at first to see the calories you've eaten in the beginning but you will get used to it. There is a chart in the New Atkins for a New You that shows the list of foundation veggies that they stress getting 12-15 net carbs from. This list is measured raw. However, there is also a cooked veggie list that says everything in that list is measured after cooking. These have higher net carbs than the raw.
I think you might see that the longer you are on Atkins, the calories you take in will go down and stabilize. Your body is getting used to this way of eating. I am on my 4th week in Induction and I cannot eat the same amount as I used to. Part of that is probably adding nuts after the 2nd week as they are filling. But I just don't have the desire to eat that much anymore.
Good luck to you.

Thanks everyone. I got a lot to look at. I also realized I am eating way too much cheese. I need to review the Atkins food a bit better. Oh well, a little less progress than I thought but hey, thanks you all, I am on my way.

The Atkins Diet Revolution book is a great resource. It explains in it that people will tend eat more calories on a low carb diet, but that done correctly, our bodies will actually burn more calories than it would on a low fat/low cal diet. I was also a bit alarmed to see my calories higher, but the weight and inches keep moving down, so it is working

Good luck! I weigh in every day which has to stop. It is too easy to get caught up in the excitement of seeing the scale drop so much in a week-that is because of water weight I am sure.

Need suggestions on healthy/low-calorie foods.
You can use shakes for a few days. I have used the Atkins shakes and they are very good tasting. Soups are good though as stated above you may have to puree them. You could puree or blend cottage cheese ...

Even though fat doesn't count in Atkins, it can cause you to gain or not lose weight if you consume too much. Be careful of over eating this nutrient. ie: cream, cream cheese.
