I thought hypothyroidism was a cause of not being able to lose weight, or weight gain-my source is wikipedia and the women's health network under thyroid health- so that means you will have an easier time according to these articles-Thyroid health
Perhaps it is the other meds, maybe your doc can give you an alternative.

THROUGH YEARS OF TRIAL AND ERROR, I LEARNED WHAT'S BEST FOR ME IS KETOGENIC EATING. WHILE ATKINS FALLS UNDER THIS CATEGORY, THERE ARE MANY TYPES OF KETOGENIC DIETS. IN A NUTSHELL: HIGHER FAT, MODERATE PROTEIN, NEAR INDUCTION LEVEL CARBS. I STRUGGLE TO KEEP FATS ABOVE 50% TO AVOID WEIGHT GAIN AND NEED AROUND 65% FOR SUSTAINED WEIGHT LOSS.

I'M IN A SIMILAR SITUATION HAVING HYPOTHYROID AND TAKING MULTIPLE MEDS KNOWN TO CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN. ADDITIONALLY I HAVE CUSHINGS AND INSULIN RESISTANCE WHICH ALSO CAUSE WEIGHT GAIN AND RESISTANCE TO WEIGHT LOSS. I BECAME INCREASINGLY FRUSTRATED WITH THE STANDARD LINES FROM THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY. IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ME.

HIGHER FAT KETOGENIC DIETS ARE OFTEN CRITICIZED BY HEALTH PROFESSIONALS JUST AS ATKINS WAS. I STARTED REVIEWING CLINICAL STUDIES AND BODY BUILDING SITES FOR FAT LOSS WITH MUSCLE PRESERVATION. SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS WERE PRIORITIES. THEN I INCREASED MY FATS UNTIL I FOUND MY SWEET SPOT. I'VE BEEN LOW CARB ON AND OFF FOR DECADES SO THAT WAS THE EASY PART.

I WISH I COULD GIVE YOU A SIMPLE LIST OF INSTRUCTIONS BUT I DID A LOT OF EXPERIMENTING TO FIGURE MYSELF OUT. MY DOCS HAD NO SATISFACTORY ALTERNATIVES AND DISAGREE ON THE PROPORTION OF MACRO NUTRIENTS AND CALORIES. NONE GOT IT RIGHT.

THERE IS A LOT OF CLINICAL RESEARCH ON KETOGENIC DIETS IN THE TREATMENT OF DISEASE WITH WEIGHT LOSS AS A SIDE EFFECT FOR OBESE AND OVERWEIGHT PATIENTS. PUBMED IS A GOOD STARTING POINT. IT HAS BEEN QUITE AWHILE BUT IF YOU DON'T FIND RELIABLE INFO SEND ME A MESSAGE. I SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND SOME OF THE INFORMATION I USED FOR GUIDANCE. ITS TOUGH BUT METABOLIC ISSUES CAN BE OVERCOME.

Moonshadow, have you read the book? You say you are following Atkins but you're eating fries, cheeseburgers and pineapple, and subway sandwiches, just to mention a few, This is not Atkins.
We don't know what phase you're in but from your weight, i'd say you should be in induction and none of those foods are allowed on induction.

I also am hypothyroid and have been for 40 years, it' makes losing weight a little harder but not impossible. Stop eating all processed foods, eat fresh veggies to get your 15 - 20 net gms of carbs. Low carb/high fat, protein meal plans do work but only if you don't combine them with sugar products.

You really have to read the book and understand how it works and why you can't combine these foods to make it work.

good luck.

That is an excellent article especially the top tips. I also eat as much from the sea as I can including seaweed and I take kelp. The more I eat of these products, the lower my synthroid dosage is.

I don't know what your other medication is that you are taking but if a side effect is weight gain, then it's all the more reason to really stick to the diet 100%

I've also been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I was prescribed synthroid for a while. I did not experience weight gain at all. Frankly, I did not see a significant difference while taking it. I discontinued it on my own. You probably should consult with a physician before doing that however. (Do as I say, not as I do. Ha) My son does not have hypothyroidism, but had a growth hormone deficiency linked to his thyroid. He was prescribed synthroid and it actually made him lose weight (about ten pounds). The only medication I have ever really taken where I saw a significant weight gain without a change in my diet was fertility medication. Otherwise, I can't really recall any meds that affect my diet as much as simply eating the wrong things and inactivity. I do not do Adkins. It works for many, but I have been successful (so far) with calories in/calories out. I like that I am able to eat whatever I want so long as I adjust the rest of the day with healthier choices. I do attempt to restrict my carb intake to about 40% of my daily calories and I mostly try to avoid sugar-filled foods. I strive for more of a Zone Diet composition to my daily intake. I do believe that the biggest determining factor in longterm weight loss is simply adherence to a healthy lifestyle change and determination. You do have to be honest with yourself though and when you fall off the wagon or slip up, logging those foods you probably shouldn't have chosen to eat like french fries keeps you honest with yourself. Lord only knows the times I have cringed when I log something I knew I shouldn't have eaten (my vice tonight---1/2 slice of cheesecake I shared with my husband). But, part of life is learning to adjust to the consequences of your choices. I shared a piece of cheesecake tonight, so tomorrow I am running my butt off and will likely lower the amount of carbs I consume. For me, it is about balance. I think the hormone levels will follow suit.

You only fail when you stop trying. So take that first step NOW (not tomorrow, next week, or next month) and keep on going! Start with a first step that seems easy and take it from there.
