You really need both. They call it "cardio" for a reason. It's good for your heart (and also your brain and mood).

Weight training builds muscle and muscle burns fat. Muscle has to be fueled. So if you do weight training it may seem to slow your weight loss but what's really happening is you are gaining muscle as you lose fat. (No, the fat doesn't "turn into" muscle.)

Like cardio weight training also improves your mood. Do both and you'll be in much better health, physically and mentally.

Both.... Try HIIT that incorporate both if you don't have time to spend on both. But ultimately you need to build muscle to reshape your body. Cardio burns more calories, but you can still end up flabby

Both, absolutely. Exactly as NCNOLE says. HIIT can also give you an afterburn effect, so your metabolism will continue to burn more calories after your workout. Pretty cool! Smile

I agree - both. The cardio helps you drop weight faster and the weight training makes you look better.

You need to burn calories to lose fat, & cardio will do that much faster. The problem with doing ONLY cardio is that you will lose muscle mass as well. If you want to lose ONLY fat, you need to do weight training too since that will help you preserve the muscle mass you have. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest, so obviously you want to keep what you've got, at the very least.

Building muscle in a calorie deficit is not common, if it happens at all. Bodybuilders have to work their asses off to bulk & eat at a surplus to gain muscle mass. But you'll still preserve & define your existing muscle by weight training while losing weight, & as some of the others said, it will reshape your body the way you want it to.

I've been strength training since about 60+ pounds ago & couldn't be more pleased with the results. Fat loss aside, feeling strong is AWESOME.

Pump some iron. HARD.

I have been doing cardio and weight training for the duration of my weight loss ( 40lbs ). I can lift considerably more weight than at the start (double on some muscle groups). So its not true you cannot gain muscle on a deficit. I would recommend both cardio and resistance work.
I try not to get more than a 1200 calorie gap between burn and eaten on a single day. If I do, I try and make this up over the next few days.

I agree with Chuck Roast. You need both cardio & weight training for overall health.

I agree with what a lot of people have already said about using both. I was just curious to know what HIIT was.

Mrs Tofu- it's High Intensity Interval Training. Basically, you push yourself to the max for short bursts as part of your workout. If you're doing regular cardio, adding a few intervals can really boost the cals you burn in your workout. I'm a fan of Jillian Michaels approach of using HIIT in combination with resistance training, largely using your body weight. It gives you the benefits of cardio and strength training in one workout- how's that for multi-tasking? Wink

Neither cardio nor weight training are needed for fat loss. It's 100% a diet issue. For general health and fitness both are great. And if you exercise you can eat a little more - ideally as much as you burn by exercise.

A well-rounded program should include cardio, resistance, and stretching. But I agree with sravia1 that exercise is not required, as people who are unable to exercise because of physical limitations can indeed lose weight.

Weight training is clearly better. If you are in caloric balance while lifting weights, your weight stays constant but you become thinner by building muscle while losing fat. That won't happen with cardio, you will just stay the same. Having said that, adding cardio after weight training or on "off" days makes you feel good and quickens the weight loss (or allows you to eat more, take your pick). HIIT is most effective per time spent on cardio because of its boost to the metabolism.
