it says in many mags that you can eat low-fat dairy. For instant low-fat yogurt or fat free milk and lose weight. However my husband says that if I eat any dairy I'll gain wt. What experiences have you had?

Depending on what you're doing, most dairy will trigger an insulinemic response, which causes the body to hang on to fat. I can't say this for all dairy, and you're probably better off just eating the whole milk stuff than all of the over-processed low-fat stuff. But then again that's up to you, If it works and you're currently eating it, I say keep doing it.

A cup of skim milk has roughly 90 kcals. If that 90 calories puts you over your energy expenditure for the day by 90 calories, eventually you will gain weight.

No matter the insulin production or lack of, a body can't spontaneously create energy, so it can't "hang on to fat" if you don't feed it more than it needs.

Really, that's all the complexity you need.

I eat dairy twice a day. I have a protein shake in the morning made with 8 oz of skim milk and a nonfat Greek yogurt for lunch. I have never heard of milk making you gain weight. Everybody is different, so you have to judge for yourself. I would try the milk and see what happens. Remember this is a lifestyle change and it is never good to cut out entire food groups.

Dairy contains the inflammatory fatty acids (omega-6) as opposed to the anti-inflammatory (omega-3) acids. Cutting out dairy could reduce inflammation. I personally avoid dairy as much as possible and have really noticed the benefits. (Less side effects during TOM for the ladies)

If you are drinking milk in place of water, then you are adding calories. Dairy can be high in calories (some yogurt has >200 calories/serving) while others are lower in calories. Choose wisely!

Your husband is mistaken. Dairy consumption is correlated with weight loss and lower incidence of obesity. See: The Role of Dairy Foods in Weight Management

Correlation isn't causation though - dairy will cause you to gain weight if you consume enough of it. Energy balance still matters. And lactose intolerance can also be a problem, regardless of the effects on weight.

If you're not intolerant/allergic to dairy, and don't habitually overconsume it, there's probably no need to avoid it.
