Should I worry about sodium

Hello ThereSmile

This is my first post since finding this amazing website. I have be journaling for about a week now and am horrified by the amount of sodium I ingest.

I range from 3000 to 3400 milligrams of sodium per day. I know that a person can live on as little as 500mg and shouldnt go over 2300mg.

I am on the Jenny Craig diet, so some of this is not within my control at this time. How worried should I be?

I can say that I am not a 'sodium sensitive' person. My blood pressure is usually really good like 120/80.

Any advice would be appreciated!

I would try to keep it at the 2300 or even a 1000, because if it's not the short term effects that may be of immediate concern then definitely be more aware of the long term effects...for some people (myself included) consuming sodium above the recommended levels results in edema...legs so swollen you may not be able to get into the jeans you just wore the day before. or you can't fit into your shoes without feeling'll see a 5-10lb weight gain on the scale...from all the water that followed the then looking at a long term effect of consistent high sodium intake. Some of this you may already know...but when sodium enters your system, it draws fluid...they always say water follows salt...this is why you swell up whenever you eat a lot of sodium; however an increase in fluids in the vascular system results in greater pressure which over time will result in high blood pressure...which increases the risk of heart disease (because your heart has to squeeze out a larger amount of fluid so it stretches the muscle the long term making it hard for the heart to pump/contract as hard or effectively with the lose muscles). Consistent and long term intake of high sodium levels can also cause a handful of other problems...I know it's hard because I'm trying to monitor my sodium intake. If you cook foods from scratch it's likely that you can monitor the amount of sodium you add but when I buy things already prepped then it's like you have way more sodium than you need or want. I hope this answers you question if not I'm sure another member will step in.

Just wondering.... but if you're on Jenny Craig don't you pay them to answer these type of nutrition questions? I know on Nutrisystem (which doesn't even charge a membership fee) we can ask the nutritionist questions like this.

Yeah good call getting a second opinion.. the people SELLING you product probably are not the best ones to give fair and unbiased advice. But as far as the amount of sodium you are getting I have no idea.. that does seem like a ton of sodium though. I would do some googleing as well and see what that turns up.

This may take some research, but I doubt humans evolved to consume the amount of sodium most of us eat today.

I typically have low blood pressure so I don't do anything about sodium. I don't add salt to my food, but I'm sure I get a ton from my eating habits which unfortunately still consist of lots of fast and packaged food items.

I do know that when I've had an exceptionally high sodium meal my weight does go up due to water retention the next day. The cure for this is drinking copious amounts of water to flush out the sodium.

I started tracking my sodium bc I was eating good, but not losing and feeling bloated. I found that my sodium levels were too high. When I lowered them I started losing and felt much less bloated. So I know for me extra sodium causes me to retain water.

Hi - I'm just curious as to what you're eating that's causing so much sodium? I'm on Jenny Craig too - the 1500 plan, though my calories range from about 1300 to 1700. I eat 3 Jenny meals and 1 snack a day, supplementing with my own fruits, veggies, and dairy per the program, and I never go above 2300 mg. I've love to help you out - what are we doing differently from each other - LOL?

I've never looked into Jenny Craig, so I am not familiar with the there a nutitional breakdown for the meals they send you?

Make sure you are entering your food in your food diary. I just looked back over the last couple weeks and my sodium seems to be between 1200 (low) and 3200 (high) but I realized most of the excessive sodium was coming from unexpected sources, like salsa and carrots, i.e. free foods.
Once you learn what they foods are you can plan around the extra salty days.

I would increase your water intake if you are under 75 oz of water a day.

You can print out your diet for the whole month to see what your sodium is. Go to enter food. Click the print in the upper right side. go to bottom of next page and print whole month. YOu can select any month from the past or current month. Pretty cool to look at.

I did some quick research, and according to a study in 2004, an adequate intake of sodium for an adult between 9 and 50 is 1,500-2,000 mg/day. And surprisingly they found that around 85% of males and 60-80% of females exceed that recommended intake by a lot: 4,000 mg/day. (These numbers were recommended by the Institute of Medicine)

If this is something you're really worried about, talk to your doctor and see if you need to get off Jenny Craig. But remember.. it's all temporary anyway. Once you reach half your goal, you'll be planning half your meals so you'll have more control over your diet Smile Hope this helps.

I make low carb shakes with cocoa powder, almond milk, vanilla, and stevia. Whip up in the blender with ice cubes til slushy. Yum! and low carb low cal.

Eating so little will put your body into starvation mode. And that's not good - long term you could get ill, you need to eat a sensible amount for your weight.
