I have Crohn's Disease. I have had it for 15yrs, have had 8inches of my intestine removed and had to have my stomach and bowel reconnected. I am at the point where I have had to reduce what foods I eat, so that the only fruit I can cope with are strawberries, bananas, apples if I peel them (as with peaches, nectarines and plums). Most veges are on the "don't touch list". I have always found it hard to lose weight and am a little disappointed that I didn't get the side-affect of weight loss.

I am a worried that I will never lose enough weight to feel better about myself and am struggling to eat all the healthy stuff and what to subsitute it with. All and any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

I think your best bet is to consult a doctor, or even better a nutritionist. Some of the advice that you get here could be good, but you really want someone who knows the specifics of your condition and dietary needs.

I had ulcerative colitis at a young age which left me with the same surgeries you had, only instead of 8 inches, I lost my entire large intestine. I was able to go through life with only self decided food limitations since my doctor told me I'll learn on my own what to eat and what not to eat, but because of the scar tissue from the surgeries, I'm left with a huge difficulty in toning and lose weight in my abdomen due to the damage of having the muscles cut. So I feel your pain.

I assume you're like me in that you can't take diet pills or do anything extremely intensive because of your CD. I've had some personal experiences with nurtitionists about my diets and they weren't much help, so if you go specifically for a nurtitionist, research one out that specializes in your case.

Some questions you might consider when seeing your doctor is what about V8? How about juicing veggies and fruits? A high quality juicer might be a good option for you.

My suggestion would be to focus on the foods that you can eat and try to build a balance diet around that. And remember that with proper diet control and balance you can eat the same thing for two meals a day every day and still lose weight. So you might try some different foods (with UC or CD, try something new in small quanities and see how well you you feel) if heav meats are too tough, try tuna for proten, or if bread and vegs are too heavy, try oatmeal for fiber. After three years of really dieting, I have lost some weight but I have really gained more control.
Overall, I would test and try foods to control the CD, then adjust the quantities to control weight. I can only wish you the best and tell you that you are not the only one in this fight, I promise.

for 30 years I have been on a low fat, low cholesterol, low potassium, low phosphorus, low protein, low calcium diets, low purine. All I can tell you is smaller portions, maybe more egg for protein, and start a list of any foods that give you trouble post it on the fridge. dont be too strict on yourself and try to keep your daily intake even within 300 cal. This way you train your body what its going to get.

And also have not inherited the weight loss symptom...I know how you feel, not being to eat the "healthy" meals, wholegrain is out, some veg I can eat like carrots, sweet potato etc, not much fruit though... but yip, dr don't really know about what to eat and what not to eat, cos everyone's experience is different, there NO set rules with Chrons. After 15 years you should know what you are able to eat, just reduce the portion sizes I think.. I have the same medical issue...going for an operation next month, take care, and all the best, you're not alone!

Me, my mom and grandpop all have both and have had awful experiences medicating the illnesses, so I now only use diet and exercize to treat my symptoms. This doesn't work for everyone of course (and had I turned up with colitis of the ulcerative sort or crohn's after my upper and lower GI testing, I don't know that diet alone could would work). In any case, the nutritionist route helps so much. My warning is that my body seems fickle and ever-changing and foods phase onto and off of my "no" list. I do elimination diets when my symptoms flare. I have found that egg whites, tofu and avocado never irritate me and provide lots of nutrients (egg yolks on the other hand, do trouble me from time to time and muder my cholesterol level.) I do have the weight loss side effect - but it is not something to long for - I ended up with fatty liver from very rapidly dropping 35 pounds (Also, a 103 pound 5'9" adult woman is really scary. I seriously looked like a praying mantis or Skeletor, the He-Man villian!)

Peas, corn and beans are difficult as are any raw veggies if you are in post op or flare. You may be able to add them in when you are in a remission state but don't overdo. At one point I was eating baby food veggies, kinda gross but that was all I could deal with.

The doctors and nutritionists have not been helpful to me at all in what I can eat. Its been trial and error, and sometimes i eat something one week and it affects me badly, and a week later doesn't have any affect. Potatoes seemed the most soothing to me but doctor said I have to cut out carbs to treat insulin resistance. I also cannot eat much fruit, no raw veggies, and don't like most veggies anyway. My body is also bass ackwards! Fibers give me runs, and things that give most people runs make my output thicker. Sometimes I live on Pepto Bismal. But I have lost weight before and you can too. Before I didn't watch my diet but I did exercise. Now i'm watching my diet and will start getting more active. You may have a long hard road but I'm positive you can do it. God Bless!

This is a good starting point, but you really need an exercise plan to maximize the results. Even if it is just walking. Get moving!
