How much Fat is too much Fat?
Thanks Ebivr and Twinklebun. Also, Jesse_M, I have heard of the paleo diet, I actually have a few family members that are on it right now. However, I am really only trying to eat as healthy as possible not looking for a specific "diet" per se. I already have enough restrictions due to being vegan! lol, but thanks :)

Eating and Smoking
Good job! Keep it up. I quit last June and it was the best decision I ever made. It is hard not to over eat when you quit smoking but here are a few tricks I used, hope they help. When you want to smoke, brush your teeth (weird but it works), chew on twizzlers (not too often though), chew on mint flavored tooth picks or even a straw. Also try sunflower seeds or pistachios, they keep your hands busy which is really important. Good luck! You can do this!!!!

How much Fat is too much Fat?
Just wondering how many grams of fat a day is good on a 1700 cal diet? I am vegan and eat pretty well (very few processed foods) mostly veggies, beans and grains, but I do use a good amount of olive oil and eat lots of avocado and nut butters so my fat can be pretty high (even though it is mostly good fat). Not sure if this is a big deal as long as I am staying under my max calories. I have been losing weight, but pretty slowly considering the amount of exercise I do and my virtually clean diet. I mean I almost never eat junk food or sweets, never eat white bread or simple carbs. My only indulgence is the very occasional little square of dark chocolate, a sprinkle of daiya "cheese" or some veganaise (which is made from grapeseed oil). Just wondering if my fat consumption might be the culprit. Any thoughts?

How do I record a restaurant soup?
I am not sure about the right way to do it, but for me I just look for roasted red pepper soup and then when I find one in the database I adjust the servings until it equals the 480 calories. Hope this helps!

exercise
You just have to do it. It sounds harsh, but there aren't really any secret tricks. I work 12 hour days (nights actually), have 4 children, two of them under the age of 2, and I just have to force myself to work out for an hour before I leave for work, or right after I get home. Sometimes this means I only sleep for 4-5 hours, but even then I feel better because I worked out. It is really hard, but once you push past that first couple of weeks it becomes a routine and you get used to it. Then you will feel bad if you don't do it. I promise it gets easier! Just decide to do it. "If it doesn't challenge you, then it doesn't change you." Good luck!

From 188 to 140 in 9 months (done right)
Congrats on your transformation! I just finished week 1 of P90X (loving it), but if I get the results I want from that then I plan on moving on to P90X2 after that! Thanks for sharing :)

fatsecret food database
Ok, so the data base is full of items that have been entered in by members. That being said, all of the info may not be correct. As to your second question, when you type in an item and it comes up with not found in database, it should ask you if you want to add it to the database. Just click yes. It will also ask if you want to keep it private or share it. Hope that helps.

I think I found that it works best if I just count the calories I eat from Midnight to Midnight, regardless of when I sleep. As for sleeping...I found the cure. It is called P90X! That makes me so tired I couldn't possibly stay awake if I wanted to! Plus there is so much food on their nutrition plan I can easily spread it out over 24 hours if I need to on my long days. We will see how well this works at next weeks weigh in.

HCG
This is not a long term healthy way to lose weight. I caution against it. It really seems as though the weight loss comes from the extreme calorie defecit and HCG is only the "appetite supressant". How will you maintain this long term? Even 1,000 calories is low (especially if you are doing insanity/working out), and unhealthy. We all dip below our RDI once in a while, but trying to maintain that type of calorie defecit long term is not realistic. You said you do not believe in "diets", but that is exactly what this is...a fad diet scam. You should eat healthy balanced meals, and exercise to lose weight slowly and naturally. It may take longer, but it lasts longer too. Good luck.

Tofu
If you like sweet and spicy, try crispy orange marmalede tofu. Press the tofu first. Put it between some paper towels and use a heavy skillet or something sitting on top of it to press out as much water as you can. Then cut it into thin triangles. Fry those in a pan with 1-2 tbs of olive oil until brown and crispy. In a small bowl mix 2tbs orange marmalade with a little low sodium soy sauce, some siraccha (or any hot sauce), some sweet chili sauce and minced garlic, then toss it in with the tofu and coat it. Eat with brown or white rice. Yummy! Good luck!

Does anybody else hate shopping for pants/jeans?
Snow833, I wish I had that problem lol, I have NO BUTT! I gain all of my weight in my upper body. It looks totally ridiculous to have a flat butt and skinny legs with a big upper body. I am still considering a butt implant :)Don't we always want what we don't have?

Does anybody else hate shopping for pants/jeans?
I don't usually have any trouble finding pants. I think it is weird that at 156lbs you would? I mean depending on your height that should only be around a size 11/12 right? I buy mine at target or old navy, and I have had to buy up to a size 16 before. I do however hate buying shirts because all of my weight is in my stomach after my last 2 pregnancies. All I wear are sweatshirts even when it is hot. Ugh

Quit smoking
I brushed my teeth a lot and also used tooth picks, baby carrots and freeze pops. Good luck!

Motivational or Not?
It was suggested to me by a few people that a good way to keep motivated is for me to change my screen saver pictures on all of my computers to old pictures of myself at my best. I am not sure if looking at my old pre-baby "skinny" pictures all the time will motivate me or depress me. Anyone else try this? Did it work?
RE: changing shifts...I work 12 hour shifts with rotating days off. I always found it was hard to track my calories. I'v started measuring calorie intake/burned by the week rather than daily. takes a bit of the pressure off for those days when I'm awake nearly the entire day/night. As for sleep...I recomend earplugs and room darkening curtains. The more you can mimic an evening atmosphere the easier it will be for you to fall and stay asleep.
Great advice! I never thought of tracking by the week, that just might work. thank you!

explaining what you eat!
I'm starting to think that peoples' beliefs about food and diet are as sensitive as their beliefs about religion. Everyone is different and some people seem very passionate about what they are eating. So when the topic of diet comes up, I tend to act the same way as when the subject of religion comes up; I am interested in what you have to say and I respect your beliefs. I hope to expect the same from you.
I agree. I was vegan for a few years and think that mostly people argued/became defensive or critical because they felt that if I touted ethical reasons for my diet I was somehow judging them for theirs and finding them lacking (which of course was not true). But, I think that is the most common reason for people commenting or arguing with vegetarians...they somehow feel like their actions (eating meat) are being attacked and they have to defend themselves. I think that is too bad, becuase that was never my intention.

Diddles25, Thanks. I hadn't thought of the fact that I should be able to eat more calories because I am replacing sleep with activity. I will try adding 300 or so extra calories and see if that helps!
