Gastric Bypass surgery
I think this is a great post for people considering the surgery, but the person that first asked for help hasn't been to this site in over a year now. I remember back when they first posted this. I wonder what they ever decided.

ICE CREAM SUNDAE, please!
Ashley08, there are so many ways to celebrate SB style. Look up some healthy alternatives to whatever it is your craving. My biggest craving was enchiladas, nachos and cheesecake, so I found South Beach ways to make them. This weekend I was craving chocolate cake (not my normal craving) and I made a whole wheat, fat free, sugar free chocolate cake. My hubby said it wasn't too bad, kind of like a chocolate bran muffin, but it got me through my craving without the guilt! Whatever it is you crave or desire, there IS a healthy alternative so ask here, do an internet search and make yourself something yummy and guiltless. I too, am a big frozen yogurt fan. Read the labels though, most of the store brands still have way too much sugar and calories to me. I love going to Golden Spoon frozen Yogurt, just make sure you're reading your labels and choosing the best for your needs. Congrats on passing up the temptation and losing more weight. Remember these words when facing temptations...."Nothing taste as good as thin feels". Way to go!

Birth Control Pills and Weight Gain
There are pros and cons with not being able to get pregnant anymore. As I mentioned earlier, we women always have something going..I am now post menopause. I don't need to worry about birth control or pms. On the other hand now I have lack of hormones and a much, much slower metabolism. Those hormones get ya coming and going.

Cheat Day
I think the key is to find healthier options to your typical cheat items you crave. *Instead of ice cream, have frozen, non fat yogurt. *Instead of cheese enchiladas (my fave)make them with whole wheat tortillas, or flatout whole grain wraps, with lowfat cheese and chicken or lowfat cheese and black beans. *instead of a big fat greasy burger, make a healthier lean burger and grill it at home, put it on a whole wheat bun, add other toppings instead of ketchup. *If I wanted a cup cake, I'd make some kind of allowable sweet treat..there are many to choose from! For anything you want to cheat with..there is a healthier option to it. Once you start doing that, you'll wonder why you ever ate it the other way. For the first time in over a year I had a McDonalds cheeseburger (a few months back). I got on the phone with my pal and said, 'Did you know you don't even taste meat in a McDonalds cheeseburger? I just ate one and tasted NO MEAT.":? ...Because for over a year when I craved a burger, I'd plan it into my menu and make it a healthy way. It's still a cheat day, usually those frozen yogurts and grilled cheeseburgers and enchiladas still are high calorie days, but they are a healthy way to keep you towards your ultimate goal and get those cravings satisfied.

Birth Control Pills and Weight Gain
Tina, you CAN see results in your situation. What I am saying is a simple fact though that a lot of people do use these as excuses. I've been on this site now for almost two years and I have seen and heard these reasons as excuses. The OP here is someone I know very well, and she had been through many, many, many different situations and has had many ups and downs in her weight as a result of them. What I see a lot of people do is not only accounting for water weight in bc, they gain 70 pounds and blame it on the bc. I "thought" I was trying everything when I gained about 15 pounds from my depo provera. I ran 3-4 miles 4 times a week. I was active, I ate no sugar. I ate lots of veggies and thought I was doing everything right. Come to learn later, that my ex hubby was special forces and due to his activity demand, we ate high carb meals. Healthy, but we had whole wheat pasta and red potatoes and whole wheat spaghetti almost every night. I thought I was doing everything I could. But I hadn't given enough time to really research m,y individual nutritional needs. I was feeding my "family", not "me" properly. What I am saying here also is that every single woman has a reason we can say we gain weight, but it's up to us to use it as an excuse (that I indeed have seen many people do here), or use it as a reason to be even more diligent in our health and nutrition goals.

Birth Control Pills and Weight Gain
I think everyone's forgetting the fact though that it can indeed be beat. I too was on Depo and fought the gain. It was not easy and I went back and forth to my doctor a few times to get dietary and exercise advice. But I did keep my weight in control and depo is known to be the worst form of birth control for weight gain. Hypothyroid, pcos...whatever the diagnoses is...I happen to have both those things... it is not an excuse to say why your gaining weight, it's just a condition or a medication you need so now you have to be more diligent and rethink your nutrition and dietary needs. You can research, you can be diligent and still get your health and your weight in check. I just joined a hypothyroid group and was puzzled as to why no one posted any of the main dietary tips associated with this condition. Not one tip on some very important dietary guidelines. I think as women..we can use hormones, PMS, the fact that our bodies don't have the metabolism that mens bodies do,child bearing, all as a reasons to gain weight. We can all sit here and cry about how being a woman makes it soooo hard to lose weight. Is it true? well sure. Is it a doomed sentence? No. I think this post should be titled....should being a woman be an excuse to gain weight? Sorry, just being real.

Spaghetti Sauce
I get to the point (When I'm really watching it and on plan) that I cant have canned sauces, they do effect me. I always think it's better to open a can of crushed tomatoes even, and just toss in some garlic and basil (or whatever you like). The fewer ingredients, the better my body reacts. Even canned soup, no way, set's me up for more cravings and I bloat right up from the sodium.

Spaghetti Sauce
oooh, I like the Classico red pepper something or other...also the basil tomato. They aren't expensive either. Thanks for the info. Goes to show how important it is to still compare and read labels.

Spaghetti Sauce
I think even Hunts has a no sugar added sauce now. I know other people here will know too. Best of luck and go get 'em! You're doing great.

Black Beans SBD Day4
I'll have to learn more about that. You're right though about how you felt. When I started cutting back my meat and carb intake, I couldn't believe how full and sluggish I'd feel after having a meal with them both. Keep up the great work.

Black Beans SBD Day4
Black beans are the recommended legume during phase 1. I'm not sure about ketosis. I lost my weight on SB and maintained over a year now following SB but I don't know what ketosis has to do with SB. Are you keeping a thorough food diary? I have seen that help a lot here. Sorry I cant help out more but I really have no idea what you're talking about.

Need to Exercise!
When I started here, because of my heart, I could NOT exercise. I wasn't even allowed to walk around my house without my hubby there in case I fell or had a heart attack.  What I did was deep breathing. I couldn't even stretch standing up, BUT I would lay on the floor, stretch out as far as I could, as if I were on that old stretching torture device...and I would breath in and out as slow and as deep as I could, for about 10 minutes. There were a few times I even fell asleep doing so. ;) I was losing weight even from that!:!: :!: Deep breathing is something we all forget to do. As you do so, you'll start feeling better, even more energized. I say see if some deep breathing and stretching can do the trick to get you feeling refreshed. Let me know if you do and if so, how it works for you. :d

Birth Control Pills and Weight Gain
One of the most notorious weight gaining form of birth control is Depo Provera. They say something like 5 pounds in one year and after 5 years an average of 10 pounds...(something like that) I was on Depo for 12 years and kept in shape. Though I did have to work at it. I think that we as women do have to watch ourselves because hormones of course DO effect our appetite, weight etc... but it is not an excuse for weight gain. I had PCOS. I had doctors tell me being over 40 I just "have to work harder now to control my weight". I've dealt with pre diabetes. I've had heart health issues. I had a hysterectomy, went through menopause and now am told I'm also hypothyroid. Every single one of those things people say cause weight gain. I refuse to use it as an excuse though. I use it as a reason to watch myself even more diligently. Fair? Not always. But an excuse to gain weight? Only if I allow it. I truly believe that the only time you could say that your weight gain is from a health diagnosis is if you have literally and faithfully tried to control it through diet, nutrition, exercise, supplements, or anything else you find out can help combat it, to no avail.

Rosarita Vegetarian Refried Beans?
This is the info on beans in phase 1 according to the South Beach site: Beans or Legumes: Black Beans Butter Beans Chickpeas or Garbanzo
by ImLuuvd (submitted 5 years ago)
Rosarita Vegetarian Refried Beans?
I also waited for phase 2. In phase 1 I had black beans only, even though some others are permitted. Black beans were the recommended choice of SB.

Rosarita Vegetarian Refried Beans?
If you're in phase 1 I thought they were not allowed. Oh well. I was also under the assumption in phase 1 that we were to avoid items with all those mystery ingredients and ingredients we can't pronounce. I'd suggest reading every label and look for the fats and the sugars. Remember that in many fat free products they add sugar.

water retention or constipation?
It is indeed normal. I lived on veggies when I started and one would think you wouldnt have this issue but you do! I think I was only "going" maybe once every 4 days and even then it wasn't much! I went on like that for a few weeks before my body adjusted. The way it was described to me is kind of like we have much less "waste" than we used to have. Kind of like giving your dog purer dog food and they poop less. lol Just keep eating as you should.I'm sure people will have some solutions that can help. I tried some herbal teas with senna. I dont recall them really working great. If you're at a point where you're allowed a fiber 1 bar I hear they work wonders. Just think of it as a good sign, something that indeed does happen and know it WILL PASS! ;)

Too much fat
I just assumed since you were on SB plan that your cheese was low fat. Please remember how important that is, if you are not. I also have to limit my cheese. I used to put it on everything including my salad, but not anymore! Now I think to myself, would I rather have cheese on this salad or in my dinner or as a snack? I can't afford that much (even low fat) cheese into my daily fat consumption. You're getting lots of great tips here. You'll get it figured out. :d

Too much fat
Well I think one of the things you'll learn is that we get a ton of cholesterol through meat and eggs. I was recently told that my cholesterol and triglycerides are too high. Since I eat pretty healthy as it is I have been reading, reading reading on what else I can do to help lower the fat in my diet. Besides the obvious, it's meat and eggs we should be avoiding. We're supposed to get our proteins from items like legumes (lentils are great), salmon and tuna. I often tell people here when they aren't losing weight, they probably need to really kick up the veggies and eat less meat. I usually tell them to get their protien from other sources. Most women have no idea that they are getting more than enough protien in their diet without needing that huge piece of meat on their dinner plate. I never understood exactly why except that it works for everyone I say that to, now I know why. Good luck to you. Let me know if you find something that's working for you. I love to share all the things that work for others, to pass forward.
