"Why Exercise Doesn't Lead to Weight Loss" - Study Dispels Idea that Exercise "Revs&q
I think a lot of people get in trouble by thinking that a 10 minute walk is going to allow them to eat half a pizza. It just doesn't work that way. The VAST majority of calories burned in a day are used by functions you don't even think about... like thinking, and breathing, and keeping your body functioning. Exercise just doesn't really burn that many calories. An average person burns about 100 calories by walking or running a mile. That's only 10 M&Ms. Whoop-dee-do. While it's definitely possible to exercise enough to eat whatever you want, the amount of exercise required for that is so extreme that most people can not handle it. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend doing it anyway. This is where I'm at right now because I'm training for a marathon. I haven't counted a calorie in months, but I know I'm not getting the absolute best nutrition, and I could definitely be losing faster if I was tracking my intake. That's why controlling your diet is so important. Relying on exercise alone is an uphill battle.

Vegan diet
How do you get B12? I've recently started an almost vegan diet to try to lower my cholesterol and am good with the protein and iron but am concerned about b12
There are B12 fortified orange juices, cereals, and milk substitutes (soy milk, rice milk, etc.) that are good sources of B12 for vegans. Also, you could just take a B12 sublingual tablet or multivitamin with b12 in it.

Vegetarian switch
As a vegetarian myself, I second what healsdata said. DO YOUR RESEARCH! You need to know a bit about nutrition in general, and vegetarian specific needs before just diving in. I'll also add that a vegetarian diet isn't some sort of magical cure-all. I actually gained about 10 pounds when I first went vegetarian because I relied too much on full fat cheeses for protein. The same rules apply to all diets, even plant-based ones. You have to burn more calories than you eat to lose weight. That being said, I have no plans of going back and I wish you luck if you decide to stick with it after doing a bit of research.

U.S. Health Care
Any dieting advice? ;)
Always... Get into endurance sports (running, cycling, etc.) to burn calories like crazy and make your cardiovascular system strong. If you've never done one before, train for a 5K. You never know until you try... you might like it. If you've already done that, up the ante and go bigger.
Divided, I am not trying to hurt you. Please be so kind as to not attack me personally.
The over-dramatic wording was a cue for you not to take that seriously. Mr. Rollie Eyes was a fail-safe. I'll try harder next time.

VERY IMPORTANT POST
I did not realize my journal entries would be published for others when I joined this site. Is it easy to delete entries that you would prefer to keep private?
You can set your profile to private so that none of your journal entries are seen, but if you just wanted to delete certain entries you could use the "edit" option on a journal and just delete everything. Once it's cleared just hit "save" to make the change. It may not let you save a blank journal, and if that's the case you can just replace everything with a "." so that something is there to save, but still looks pretty much blank.

How can I get more protein into my diet?
I would also look at just getting a protein whey supplement/shake/bar if you can. Eating too much soy can have detrimental effects..just something to think about
There are a lot of arguments on both sides of the soy debate, but nothing concrete really exists to condemn or sanctify it. Personally I avoid soy because 1) the taste/texture isn't for me, and 2) I don't feel like being a guinea pig until more conclusive data exists. Still, the occasional slice of tofu isn't going to kill you. I would also add that whole foods are just generally better for you than supplements. Supplements have their place, of course, but make sure you're not depending on them for nutrition.

How can I get more protein into my diet?
What sks1986 mentioned, plus nuts, seeds, eggs, and low-fat dairy. I used to eat a lot of low fat cheese when I was trying to increase my protein. You can find low fat mozzarella sticks that are fairly low calorie (60-80 calories per piece) with about 8g of protein each.
I would still like to know if it's possible to edit a member name.
The site moderators can change your name for you. I remember a friend on this site doing so. As I've never done this myself I don't exactly know the process, but I believe the best way to start is by using the "Contact" option at the very bottom of the page. Clicking "Contact" will take you to a message screen where you can send your message to the moderators. If you send a message about why you want to change your name, and what you would like to change it to I'm sure they would help you out.
I just wanted to say that I think people get offended [...]because[...]your "humor"[...](I feel) is in poor taste.[...]
That's a lot to infer from text. Unfortunately you can't hear my jovial tone or see the goofy grin on my face. I can only write to amuse myself. Some people will think it is funny (a minority, I admit), and some people will be deeply offended. That is not my problem, or yours, or anyone else's. It just is. I can't change anyone's mind if they think I'm a d***head, but I honestly wouldn't want to. To quote Popeye, "I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam."
And for the record /0 is right about his sacrastic A-hole....
Thank you for the support.
Now, yes I worry someone will recognize my pic and ridicule my diet/life/stories
You are a success story for this site, Cindy. No one has any reason to ridicule you, and you are an inspiration to a lot of people. Many people are embarrassed about using this site (or other dieting sites) when they should be proud of what they have accomplished.

VERY IMPORTANT POST
You are taking that way too seriously and way too personally. Calm down. Since you have no idea who I am, allow me to introduce myself. I am the sarcastic-a**hole-extraordinai... of this site. And while my writing style is harsh, it is meant to be taken as a joke. It is obviously not your brand of humor. For the record, you didn't REALLY have to send me your credit info, and I'm not REALLY going to steal Poet-In-Motion's TV. Does that clear things up a bit? Allow me to make my points in a more monotonous fashion as to not upset anyone's delicate sensibilities. 1) Posting personal information is, and has always been, a security risk. If you are not comfortable taking these risks, do not post personal information online. No one is forcing you to be here. You accept all responsibility for your actions. 2) You can share personal stories, experiences, and advice with people under a false user name (shocker: Divided By Zero is NOT my real name), but it is still not a good idea to let out extremely personal information like your real name, address, workplace, etc. to people you do not trust. Internet predators can and will take advantage of that information. 3) If you're paranoid about someone finding out you're on a diet online, your ego is immense and you care way too much about what other people think of you. You should be proud of wanting to improve your health, not ashamed. @WECANDOTHIS: about
"By the way, I left that post on your journal while BOTH of us were logged off. "
You could not have been logged off because the site still posted your name with your comments. Do you have Internet Explorer set to automatically log on to certain sites and to remember passwords? Do you keep the "Remember Me" box checked when you log in ("Remember Me" makes you log in to Fat Secret automatically)? If so, that could be what you are experiencing. If you were truly logged off the site would not have been able to post your user name with your comments on Cindy's journal. I just logged off and clicked on your name. It redirects me to sign in. So rest assured, your information is private and no one can see it when they aren't logged in. Even when I AM logged in, because I'm not on your Buddy List I can not see your weights or journals. Your information is private. You don't have anything to worry about.

Shakes?
I would recommend that you eat something small before any workout, even early morning. You don't want too much because it would upset your stomach, but having something like a small granola bar will help your workout. The danger of working out in the morning without eating first is that you have basically been fasting for 8-12 hours. It can be stressful to your body to work out in that condition and you are more likely to be in a catabolic (muscle breakdown) state. [edit] About your original question... The only time I get shaky during a workout is when I haven't eaten enough. Try increasing your calories to see how that helps.

calories
It depends on a lot of variables. Like... How tall are you? How old are you? Do you really need to lose weight at 135? Answers without that kind of information are just guesses.

New and exploring
Do you mean how to actually add someone, or if there is some sort of etiquette to making friends? If you're talking about how to... Just go to their profile and under their profile pic will be an option to "Add to My Buddies." If you're talking about etiquette... I think most people just browse the forums and journals for like minded people. Never hesitate to add someone. We're all here for the same reason.

My intentions are good but.......
There isn't a need to feel guilty about chocolate. Just work it into your calorie totals for the day and have what you can. I don't believe in forbidden foods. If I want something, I have it. I just don't go crazy. The whole idea of "this food is bad" and "I can't have this" are what make people break their diets and binge in the first place. I can't really help you with late night snacking because that has never been a vice of mine. I've never felt an urge to eat anything after dinner.

Welcome to the internets. You must be new here. A few pointers: If you are embarrassed about using this site, then don't use it. If you don't want people to know about you, don't post about yourself. Google will find you. No. Matter. What. You can set your account to "private" or "buddies only". I call dibs on Poet-In-Motion's TV when she leaves for vacation. Posting your real name, address, and credit card number is usually a bad idea. But I won't protest if you send these things directly to my inbox. No one is forcing you to post personal pictures and info. You did this. Transparency is kind of the point of this website. It makes you accountable.
