Very funny take on Fad Diets vs Calories in/out for weightloss
So, you're saying that men and women are DIFFERENT? OMG, alert the press...I personally think it's ok that we're different. Actually I think those differences should be celebrated. I thought the article was somewhat humorous. I've always enjoyed hearing men talk about their perceptions of women and our emotional ways of doing things. And what woman hasn't bemoaned the fact that men "just don't get it" about women. One of my favorite movie scenes of all times is the one in "Sleepless in Seattle" where the guys pretend to be all emotional over a scene from "The Dirty Dozen"...cracks me up every time. His sister doesn't get all huffy when she sees what they're doing. She laughs because she knows it's true...Why don't we celebrate our differences instead of fighting about them? Now some will say I'm missing the point because this is about...(gasp) dieting!!! (gasp) exercise!!! Oh well, I'll just have to take my lumps, I guess. I don't know if the guy was trying to be funny or if he's a jerk...either way, any honest woman will have to admit that either they, or some woman they know or have known acts EXACTLY the way he described. I'm ok with that. I rather enjoy the fact that we're different...it's what makes the world go 'round. :-)

I agree with mummydee. Moderation. Stop trying to make yourself eat stuff you don't like. It's not sustainable long-term.

frustrated and quitting
Bless your heart, dianablock, I agree with the first couple of posters...if your diet calendar really reflects EVERYTHING you're eating, your body is in starvation mode, as Pete1998 said. Counterintuitive as it sounds, you have to eat to lose weight. Please check into doing something different. You CAN do this...just not this way.

Hi Everyone
One thing for dang sure...we ALL struggle with the same crazy things! Doesn't matter what weight we currently are...I've been here for about a year, and I will testify that I've seen the same things from just about everyone I've come across. What I'm trying to say is this, Michael, you are in good company. FS is a great place to be for support and all kinds of help. Welcome aboard and good luck on your journey!

how to use
ej, the green arrow going down is showing that you burned more calories than you took in. Net cal is what you're left with when you subtract the calories burned from the calories eaten. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Help! Need Motivation!!
Sometimes what helps me (right now, actually) is to let my buddies here on FS know how I'm feeling. They're really good at kicking me into action again...maybe that's just how MY brain works for this crazy business :) Also, look around this website. Read people's stories. Some of them are pretty amazing! You'll see that most people have gone through what you are right now, and you can also take inspiration from those who have achieved their goals. On another note, try changing up what you're doing, either exercise-wise or food-wise, or both. Sometimes our bodies need something different than we're giving them; boredom, kinda...and one last thing that helps ME...look; you've already lost 40 pounds...you do NOT want to go backward and then have to start all over! 40 pounds is a BIG DEAL! Hang in there, kasha!

It's true that we are judged, often unfairly, by our looks, and if we are totally honest, we will have to admit our own guilt, whether it's about a person's weight or some other physical aspect. It is apparently human nature to do the very thing we find so reprehensible in others...So while it's nice to defend this woman, or anyone else we feel has been treated badly, the cold, hard fact is that we usually have a log in our own eye in the midst of attempting to remove a speck from someone else's.

These are all great observations...I agree with all of you on at least "some" of what you're each saying. I especially like that no one is going off on either person in the scenario. A bit more open, honest dialogue is always a good thing!

I'm not looking forward to winter for the simple reason that it will make my daily walk almost impossible. I haven't figured out a way around it...anybody have ideas that don't include the gym? I'm a cheapskate :-)

Ditching the scale
I TOTALLY agree with Jannabelle...particularly the avoiding thing. It's how I got to 170 pounds! Sure, my clothes were getting tighter, and I knew I was gaining...but actually seeing that number is what finally got me going. And for the most part, it has been my friend and an inspiration as I've lost weight...but hey! To each his own! Whatever works :-)

Head Cravings
I wonder if it's the combo habit of watching TV and snacking. If you do crafts or something with your hands, maybe that would help, or maybe you need to find something altogether different to do in the evenings. Like you said, you always wanted a smoke after a meal...could be the same kind of thing. Just a thought....

Hmmm...well, I WAS going to say she's not much of a friend, but I peeked at your diet calendar, and maybe she's onto something. Perhaps you aren't logging everything you're eating, but...if you are, you're starving yourself most days. Please don't do that.

Do you eat breakfast? How important is it?
Maybe it's one of those "not one size fits all" things. For me, it seems to matter what my plans for the day are. If I'm going to be working or out running around, I've found that protein for breakfast is the way to go, otherwise, I crash about 10 AM. But if I'm just going to be hanging out at home, I'm good with just my coffee, then maybe an early lunchtime snack. I graze, so I may not be the best example of how to conduct normal eating habits :)
